Estes Wins Heckman Takes Points Lead at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, Oh (8/27) - Gary Estes of Miamisburg and his Bond Machine Pontiac captured their fifth NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late model feature Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway and when the points were tallied it was defending track champ Sam Heckman the new leader.
A standing room only crowd watched as Estes and Russ Bobb brought the field to the line only to see the caution flag wave as several cars tangled on turn four. After that it was Estes in the lead all the way with third place starter Jerry Stapleton moving into second with fifth place starter Sam Heckman grabbing third. Seventh place starter Don Mahaffey and fast timer Steve Foster waged a battle for the fourth place spot with Mahaffey prevailing. Right behind them a three car battle was going on between Bobb, Tony Brunke, and Mike Miller.
When starter Don Beddies waved the checker Estes cruised to his fifth win of the year with Stapleton claiming runner-up money. Heckman was home in third, snaring the points lead by only two pointsfrom Mike Miller who finished eithth.  Fourth was Mahaffey and fifth went to Foster who had quick time of 14.18.
Polsetter Derek Barnett of Yellow Sprints had the lead in the e-mod feature when on lap three the action was brought to a halt when eight cars were involved in a mix-up coming out of turn four. Knocked out of further competition were the cars of Joe Jennings, Jeff Wilson, Kyle Jones, and Jerry Stapleton.
Don Fleming Jr. of Xenia showed as the leader of the first lap after the restart but fellow townsman Charlie Davis had other ideas as he shot his Fry Home Improvements special into the lead to remain there to claim his second win of the year. Former Legends Cars driver Mike Broaddus had his best finish in his rookie e-mod season with a solid third. Veteran drivers Mike Carroll and Dick Dunlevy Jr. see-sawed for fourth with Carroll claiming fourth which moved him with ten points of Dunlevy who placed fifth. Dunlevy was fast timer at 14.26.
Gordon Watson Jr. of Riverside made his second appearance of the season a winning one by capturing the mini stock/sports trucks feature. Driving the Jerry Moore owned Chevy S-10 truck, Watson shot into the lead from his outside front row starting berth to keep the Moore Trucking name out front all the way. Points leader Eddie Flora came from fifth to claim runner-up as he and Gary Eaton who started nineth were rapidly closing the gap on Watson  when the checker came out. Eaton was third with Chuck Weaver fourth and Shawn Sparkman fifth.
It had been three months since defending pure stock champion driver Jeff Marsh of Centerville tasted the sweetness of victory lane but Friday night was his night. He started out by posting fast time for the sixth time with a clocking of 15.15. He had been running second behind leader Tom Williams when Williams, the points leader suddenly dropped out with mechanical problems.
Prior to that the field had experienced four caution periods but that didn't faze Marsh as he claimed his second win of the year in the Superior Auto Sales sponsored Camaro. Mike South Jr. claimed second with Bret Clark third. Bill Burba was fourth and Heath White was fifth  driving the mount usually driven by Brian Rauch as White lost an engine in hot laps. With Williams misfortune White moved to just sixteen points behind Williams.
The compact feature has turned into an event with the main question being who is going to be third. Tim Haerr and Gary Williams have ruled the division all season long and again Friday it was the duo in victory lane. This time it was the Affordable Auto Parts Toyota of Williams home first after waging a tough battle with Haerr who ended up second and Brett Boykin who was  right in the thick of action to claim third. Right there with the front runners was Chip Haerr in fourth and Allen Campbell fifth.
Rounding out the nights activity was the crowd pleasing shcool bus figure-8 and demolition derby. Thirteen full size buses took to the tight figure-8 track for 20 gruelling laps. With the crowd yelling and screaming the buses gave the fans their monies worth as they crashed at the X and several tipped over much to the delight of the fans. When the steam had settled Keith Davis of Dayton and his Knickerbaker Pools and Detroit Tire sponsored bus was the winner with Mark Jones, Peanuts Fillmore, and Butch Russell claiming the top four spots.
The remaining runnable buses lined up for the demo derby that was worth $400 to the winner and after a lenghthly battle to get to the last bus it was Mark Jones of Dayton in the R&L Carriers bus the victor.
This Friday night, Sept. 3, will be the final night of the season featuring free race car rides for the kids along with a full regular program. It will also be Adventures For Wish Kids Night with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
