Brunke Scores at
Kil-Kare Speedway
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Ohio (5/7/04) - Tony
Brunke of Piqua scored an impressive and emotional win Friday night at
Kil-Kare Speedway in the NASCAR Dodge Racing Series Late Model
feature. Starting eighth in his Monte Carlo Brunke made his drive to
front the hard way, passing competitors on the outside one by one as
he advanced toward the front to claim his first win of the season and
his first since one since August 6, 1999.
Polesetter Ricky
Bates, with two wins to his credit this season jumped into the lead
with one time winner and fourth place starter Don Mahaffey Jr. moving
into second with Mike Miller right behind him in third. The first
caution appeared on lap six when Russ Bobb and Mike Ward tangled with
Ward retiring from the event Bobb made a pit stop.
On the restart
Mahaffey slipped by Bates for the lead but Mahaffey's hopes of win
number two diminished eight laps later when the second caution
appeared which eliminated Bates for the night. Brunke had taken the
lead just before the caution and resumed to lead but had a scary
moment when he spun on turn four after being bumped by second place
running Miller who was sent to the tail and Brunke put back in the
lead. Even though the caution flew one more time, Brunke was not to be
denied the win as he stayed in front the rest of the way. Sam Heckman
claimed second with Mahaffey third followed by Miller and Ron Simpson.
Fast time went to Bates at 14.36.
Kettering's Mike
Carroll, a former E-Mod track champion became the fourth different
winner in that class this season as he led all the way leaving his
competitors to fend for themselves. Last years champion Jerry
Stapleton claimed second with Jason Mahaffey getting around Dick
Dunlevy Jr. to finish third with Dunlevy fourth and fifth was Jeff
Wilson. Charlie Davis had fast time of 14.18.
Urbana chauffeur
Gary Eaton Jr. became the first repeat winner in the Mini
Stocks/Sports Trucks. Kenny Snyder led the first five laps with Eaton
and his Chevy SO-10 in command the rest of the way, winning by
quarter-lap over the Mustang of Snyder. The event which ran non-stop
saw sixth place starter Eddie Flora place third with first weeks
winner Eric Snell fourth and fifth was Chuck Weaver.
Springfield's Heath
White made it two wins in a row in the Pure Stocks as he beat fellow
front row starter and fast timer Jeff Marsh (15.20) out of turn two
for the lead which he kept all the way to the checker. Marsh, last
years champion held on for second while former compact driver Jamie
Sites claimed third. It was a close battle for the next positions
though as Tom Williams came across the line fourth and Mike South Jr.,
both former winners this year claimed fourth and fifth.
The Compact division
has turned into the Haerr/Williams show as Tim Haerr of Enon and Gary
Williams of Riverside have claimed the top two spots in each of the
four events held this year. The duo started 13th and 14th respectively
in the feature and when the checker waved Haerr evened the score with
his second win to match Williams two wins. Of course second was
Williams just like the previous time when Haerr won his first
feature. Third was Steve Barnhart followed by Dave Decoct and Frank
McCabe Sr.
