Miller and Brunke Twin
Winners at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Ohio
(8/6) - NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series drivers Mike Miller and Tony
Brunke eached visited victory lane Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway
as each scored wins in the twin-25 lap Late Model features on
Craftsman Tool night.
In the
first 25 lapper points leader Mike Miller and defending champion Sam
Heckman brought the field to the line with Heckam showing as the
leader the first two laps as he tried to hold off Miller but Miller
put his Intrepid ahead of Heckman's Monte Carlo to show as the
leader the rest of the way. Gary Estes got around Heckman for second
on lap five as Miller was able to put some distance between he and
Estes until the caution came out on lap fourteen.
Tony
Brunke and Jerry Stapleton were battling for the fifth position when
they made contact with Brunke spinning and Stapleton sent to the
rear of the field. Two laps later the second caution appeared when
Ron Simpson looped it on the frontstretch and from then on Miller,
of New Madison maintained the lead to claim his first win of
the year in his First National Mortage Bank sponsored machine. Estes
was a close second with fast timer (14.08) Steve Foster third with
Don Mahaffey and Ricky Bates rounding out the top five.
The
second 25 lap feature was one of the hottest contested events of the
season with five cars jockeying for the lead lap after lap. Ricky
Bates and Russ Bobb led the field to the green flag with Bates
taking the lead with Heckman right behind him with sixth place
starter Estes right behind him and Don Mahaffey right in the thick
of action. Then here came sixth place starter Tony Brunke to join
the party. With the pressure on Bates, Mahaffey in the lone Ford in
the field moved up to challenge Bates but couldn't make the pass.
But, on the move in the Brunke style outside groove was the four
time winner Brunke and his Tom Smith Industries Monte Carlo to claim
his fifth win of the year for the Casstown driver. Don Mahafey
claimed second with Bates ending up third followed by Sam Heckman
and fifth was Ron Simpson.
The E-Mod
feature got off to a rocky start as five cars tangled on the first
turn with the machines of Mike Broaddus and Charlie Davis being
eliminated. Kyle Jones beat polesetter Jason Mahaffey for the lead
at the start to lead the first twenty laps as Dick Dunlevy Jr. was
working on Jones, trying to figure out a way to get around him and
he did as he put his First National Mortage Bank sponsored
open-wheeler around Jones on the outside to claim the lead and the
win, his fifth of the year. Jones was runner-up followed by
Mahaffey, Mike Carroll, and Derek Barnette. Fast time went to
Dunlevy at 13.97.
Friendly
rivals Eddie Flora and Gary Eaton Jr. are in a tight points battle
for the Mini Stock/Sports Trucks championship and with double points
being offered the feature ended in almost a photo finish between the
two. Flora showed as the leader all the way but earlier, on lap
seven, second place running Kenny Snyder spun while trying to pass a
slower truck with fast charging Eaton and Eric Snell also involved.
Eaton had a flat right front and body damage, however during the
caution he was able to visit his pit area for a tire change in time
to restart on the tailend. Three laps later after the first
caution Bob Larimore made hard contact with the turn one wall that
all but destroyed his Dodge Dakota. Chuck Weaver brought the final
caution out when he spun while trying to hold off Eaton who was on
his way to the front. With action back underway, leader Flora had
his job cut out for him, hold Eaton off. As the came out of turn
four Eaton charged up alongside of Flora but fell short by only
inches of the win with Flora claiming his third win of the year in
his Pro-Comp Custom Engines Chevy S-10. With Eaton second, Gordon
Watson Jr. brought Jerry Moore's mount home third with Snyder fourth
and Shawn Sparkman fifth. Eaton was fast timer at 14.09.
Twenty
one Pure Stocks lined up for their feature that saw Bill Burba and
Billy Ritchie bring the field to the line with Burba, of Eaton in
his Brands Truck Insurance sponsored Chevelle taking the lead.
Fourth place starter Jamie Sites moved into second and gave Burba a
run for his money as he pulled alongside of Burba but couldn't find
enough horsepower to make the pass. Burba claimed the win with
Sites second. Third was Jimmie Johnson followed by Mike South Jr.
and Heath White. White and Jeff Marsh tied in time trials with a
clocking of 15.16.
Who is
going to win the Compact feature is always anybody's guess between
Tim Haerr and Gary Williams, usually. Well, Friday night after the
field calmed down after trying to run four wide through the turns
Todd Pelfrey led the first three laps then Shane Williams took over
and then a Haerr, no not Tim, but Chip "The Kid" Haerr,
his older brother took over and looked like he might pull off his
first ever feature win. However, the ole pro, Gary Williams upset
the applecart so to speak as he passed Haerr for the win and Brett
Boykin sneaked in to claim second with Haerr third. Allen Campbell
was fourth and Troy Patterson fifth.
This
coming Friday night, August 13, the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck
Series that was rained-out two weeks ago will return along with the
Late Models, Mini Stocks/Sports Trucks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and
the KOIL Legends Cars will have a regional event. It will be an
action packed night with the gates opening at 5 p.m. and Legend
heats at 7:20 P.M.
