Stapleton Claims
Kil-Kare Late Model Win
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Oh (6/4) - NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series late model driver Jerry Stapleton of Troy claimed
his second feature win of the year Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway.
Driving the Terry's
Radiator Service Monte Carlo owned by his brother Carl Stapleton,
Jerry held off a serious group of challengers in what probably was the
most contested event of the season. Stapleton and Ron Simpson brought
the field to the starting line with Stapleton putting his #33 out
front. Fast timer Steve Foster jumped into second with Simpson
dropping to third but hold on because here comes Gary Estes and Tony
Brunke to put on a bumper to bumper, door to door battle for positions
behind leader Stapleton.
Lap fourteen brought
the first caution when Foster and Simpson tangled resulting in heavy
damage to Simpson's mount and Foster sent to the tail. The second
caution appeared four laps later when previous weeks winner Tony
Brunke spun and headed to the pits for a quick adjustment.
When action resumed
Stapleton really had the pressure on him as Mike Miller, Sam Heckman,
and Teddy Beach had moved up to join Estes in an effort to unseat the
unseatable Stapleton. With three laps to go Foster brought the final
yellow flag out when he spun on turn one. Again, back underway and
again the mad dash resumed for the win.
Stapleton was first
to receive starter Don Beddies checker flag but second place was
almost a dead heat with Estes beating Miller by a mere few inches for
second place money with Miller third. Sam Heckman was right behind
them in fourth and fifth went to well known open-wheel driver Teddy
Beach. Miller, with his third place finish took over the points lead
with 308 points with Brunke only two points behind with 306 points.
Kettering's Mike
Carroll became the first e-mod driver this season to claim two feature
wins. Carroll and the "Mac Attacker" McDonalds sponsored
open-wheeler took command at the start and it was bye bye to the guys
and gal behind him. He survived five cautions in route to victory in the
25 lap event Rob Garrett had probably the best finish of his career as
he crossed the finish line in second. Jeff Wilson recovered from
a lap thirteen mix-up to take third with Bob Stansell Jr. fourth and
fifth went to Charlie Davis.
Points leader Jason
Mahaffey who had been challenging Carroll was eliminated in one of the
mix-ups, dropping him to third in the season points chase. Carroll is
the new leader with Dick Dunlevy Jr. second.
One lap is all it
took for Urbana's Gary Eaton Jr. to gain the lead in the mini
stocks/sports trucks feature. Starting fourth, he showed as the
leader on lap two and kept on truckin', racking up his third win of
the year. Opening night's winner Eric Snell came all the way from
ninth to take second with third going to Shawn Sparkman.Eddie Flora
and Chuck Weaver rounded out the top five. Flora took over the
point lead with Kenny Snyder dropping to second.
Xenia's Tom Williams
increased his points lead in the pure stocks as he drove his Fry's
Home Improvement Pontiac to victory for the second time this year.
Heath White pulled alongside of Williams to lead for one lap but the
rest of the time it was Williams in front. White was second with Jamie
Sites third for the second week in row. Brian Rauch and Justin Miller
completed the top five.
The Tom Gill KOIL
Legends Car Series visited Kil-Kare for the fourth time this year and
it was a familiar name back in the feature winners circle. Second
generation driver Danny Jackson, a four time winner last season
captured the 25 lap event Friday night. Heat winner Dillon Oliver of
Bowling Green, Kentucky led the first four laps only to see the yellow
flag come out. On the restart the other heat winner, Toby Alfrey of
Miamisburg charged into the lead but his leadership was short lived
and the yellow came out with Alfrey being moved back to third spot for
jumping too quickly on the previous restart. Oliver ended up second
with Alfrey third followed by Al Renner and Jon Larkin.
Riverside's Gary
Williams really had his Toyota tuned to perfection as he sailed around
the small fifth-mile oval like a rocket, lapping almost the entire
twenty car starting field. For Williams it was his third win of the
year. Steve Barnhart claimed second for his best finish of the season
with newcomer Troy Patterson third, points leader Tim Haerr fourth and
fifth was previous weeks winner Dave Lecocq.
Next Friday night,
June 11, will be "Open Wheel Friday" with the first ever
appearance of the USAC Ford Focus Midgets, Winged Sprints on Asphalt
305 Sprint Cars, E-Mods, and the vintage cars of the Vintage American
Race Cars. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
