Mahaffey Claims Win at
Kil-Kare Speedway
Heckman Claims
Championship
Xenia, OH (9.3) -
Dayton's Don Mahaffey scored the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late model
feature Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway but it was New Carlisle's Sam
Heckman claiming his second straight track points championship.
Heckman and
Mahaffey brought the field to the line for the start of the 30 lap feature
with Mahaffey putting his Ford Taurus in the number one spot. It was a great
way to end the season as the event ran caution free however all eyes were on
Heckman and Mike Miller as the points championship would be decided as
to where they placed.
With only two
points seperating the two Heckman, the points leader had to finish in front
of Miller to snare the championship. With Mahaffey and the Bob Korn owned
Affordable Auto Parts machine holding the top spot all the way Heckman had
his hands full as Miller came from fifth to move in on Heckman.
Shortly after the
halfway signal things began to chance as sixth place starter Gary Estes and
eighth place starter Tony Brunke were on the prowl as they advanced. When
the checker waved on Mahaffey for his second win of the year, Brunke crossed
the line in second with Heckman a solid third with Estes right behind in
fourth and Jerry Stapleton passed Miller for fifth dropping Miller to sixth.
Heckman claimed
the championship by eight unoffical points over Miller in another close
battle which was highly contested all season long.
In the e-mod
feature Derek Barnette and Jeff Wilson led the field to the line with Wilson
showing as the first lap leader, Barnette the second lap, Wilson the third
and then came Charlie Davis to take over. Davis led until the caution came
out. After the restart Davis and Mike Carroll raced side by side with
Carroll finally putting his Knapp Construction open-wheeler in front to
claim the win. Davis was a very close second while challenging the two was
Dick Dunlevy Jr. who tried to pass the frontrunners but settled for third
which was good enough to claim the points championship by six points over
Carroll. Jason Mahaffey was fourth and newcomer Shawn Stroble was fifth.
Gordon Watson Jr.
took a late season liking to Jerry Moore's Chevy S-10 in the mini
stocks/sports trucks that he ran away from the field to score his second
straight win. Points leader Eddie Flora and Matt Potter brought the field to
the line with Flora leading the first lap but from then on it was the Moore
Trucking special out front until the checker. Flora placed second and
secured the points championship with third going to Shawn Sparkman. Shane
Sparkman was fourth and Potter fifth. Flora's only challenger for the
championship was Gary Eaton Jr. who started eighth and was up to third when
smoke billowed from his truck, ending his run for the night.
A fine field of
19 pure stocks started their feature which saw Bret Clark and points leader
Tom Williams bring the field to the green flag. It was a tight battle for
the lead with Clark out front but Jamie Sites had his sites set on winning
his first feature. He tried to go inside of Clark on turn one when they made
contact and Sites was sent to the tail and then Clark, who would have
remained the leader developed mechanical problems and pitted giving the lead
to Mike South Jr. South continued to lead for the win however right behind
him was Heath White, Bill Burba, Jeff Marsh, and Williams to finish in that
order.
Williams and
White were the two candidates to claim the points championship going into
the event but Williams prevailed, claiming the title by ten points over
White.
The compact
division was another race to the checker for the champinship between
defending champ Tim Haerr and Gary Williams. Going into the feature Haerr
enjoyed a twelve point lead over Williams but when the checker waved on
winner Dave Lecocq Williams was third, Haerr eighth, and it was Haerr taking
the championship by a mere two points.
For Lecocq it was
his second win of the year . Allen Campbell was second with Williams third,
Shane Williams fourth and Troy Patterson fifth.
The KOIL Legends
Cars were on hand with nineteen cars starting their feature which saw Al
Renner and Toby Alfrey lead the pack to the green flag. Alfrey and fourth
place starter Bryan Nuckles were the stars of the show as they fought each
other for the lead. First Alfrey led, then it was Nuckles, then Alfrey but
Nuckles and his Columbus Motor Speedway car was first across the line for
the fourth time this year. Alfrey was second with Dillon Oliver who was a
strong runner all season was third with Keeton Hanks fourth and Danny
Jackson fifth. Al Renner was named the Kil-Kare KOIL points champ.
As this brought a
close to the 2004 season, the Kil-Kare Speedway management would like
to thank all the fans, drivers, owners, mechanics, sponsors, and the media
for another exciting and successful season at the Greene County facility.
