Brunke Beats Heckman at
Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia,
Ohio (5/28) - Tony Brunke of Piqua celebrated the holiday weekend by
scoring his second NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing late model feature win
Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway.
Defending track champion Sam
Heckman enjoyed the lead for twenty one laps in the event that was
slowed by five caution periods. Heckman had build up a good lead but
Brunke who started seventh was busy picking off his opponents one by
one as he worked his way toward the front. He pulled alongside
Hecknman and put his Monte Carlo out front to show as the leader on
lap twenty two and that is just where he stayed to collect his second
win of the young season. Jerry Stapleton had started ninth and ended
up third with Russ Bobb fourth and Mike Miller fifth.
Xenia's Charlie Davis
started the evening off in flying fashion as he posted fast time for
the fourth time this year but his good fortune ran short in the
feature.
Starting on the pole of the
twenty five lap event alongside veteran Dick Dune Jr., Davis put his
open-wheeler out front as Dunlevy faded back but fast
charging Mike Carroll was putting the pressure on Davis when
suddenly Davis spun by himself on turn four bringing out the yellow
flag. This put the McDonalds sponsored Carroll out front to lead
the rest of the way to claim his second feature of the year. Second
was steady driving Jason Mahaffey with third going to Jerry Stapleton,
fourth was Dunlevy Jr. and fifth was Derek Barnette.
Beavercreek's Kenny Snyder showed
the trucks the quick way around the track in the mini stock/sports
trucks feature. Driving the K&B Deck sponsored Ford Mustang,
Snyder started on the pole and stayed in front all the way. A yellow
flag slowed the field when Shane Sparkman stopped on the frontstretch
enabling the field to bunch up behind Snyder. Snyder pulled away from
seventh place starter Gary Eaton Jr. who had worked his way up to
second. Eaton tried to get under Snyder with one lap to go but was
unable to complete the pass as he settled for second. Third was Eddie
Flora who had his hands full holding off the challenges of Eric
Snell who claimed fourth and fifth was Shawn Sparkman.
Eaton's Bill Burba,
a first year driver in the pure stocks has been showing improvement
each week and Friday night he scored his first ever feature win. He
out pulled fellow front row starter Tom Williams for the lead and
never looked back as he brought his Chevelle home to the winners
circle. Several multi car crashes slowed the action but Burba wan not
be denied the win. Jamie Sites seemed to have runner-up locked up
until a bum by Williams on the last lap cost him a spot as Williams
claimed second with Sites third. Mike South Jr. was home fourth and
Marsh was fifth as the drivers jockeyed for positions in the closing
laps.
In the wild compact
feature it was a new name in the winners circle as South Charleston's
Dave Lecocq scored his first ever win at Kil-Kare when he claimed the
fifteen lap feature. Lecocq built up a comfortable lead only to have
his hopes dim when the caution flag came out letting his challengers
move up to his rear bumper for the restart. Lecocq knew he had his
hands full as three time winner Tim Haerr who started way back in
seventeenth had moved up to second. Lecocq was able to hold off the
hard challenging Haerr who placed second followed by Brett Boykin,
Walter Compbell and Brian Smiley.
