Mahaffey Ends
Bates Win Streak at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Oh (4/23) - Dayton's
Don Mahaffey stopped Rickey Bates dominance of the late model division
at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night when he captured the NASCAR Dodge
Racing Series feature. Bates had won the previous two weeks but Friday
night it was Mahaffey and the Bob Korn owned/Affordable Auto Parts
sponsored Ford Taurus claiming the win with Bates finishing fourth.
Mafaffey and Steve Foster
brought the field to starter Don Beddies green flag with Mahaffey
jumping out front with Foster second. Fast timer (14.08) Bates was on
the move, taking over second on lap four and closed in on
Mahaffey when the first yellow appeared when Teddy Beach and Virgil
Powell tangled on turn one with Powell being eliminated.
On the restart Bates
continued to dog Mahaffey with Mike Miller charging toward the front
when the yellow came out when Foster brushed the frontstretch wall and
was out. Three laps later Russ Bobb was eliminated when he and Beach
made contact on turn one. From then on it was Mahaffey in command for
the win with Miller right behind him in second. Tony Brunke dropped
Bates back to fourth as he finished third with Bates fourth and Jerry
Stapleton fifth.
Jerry Stapleton's
misfortune in the E-Mod feature was a blessing for Dick Dunlevy
Jr. The two veteran drivers brought the field to the green flag with
Stapleton taking the lead and appeared to be on his way to claim his
first feature of the year. Unfortunately a mechanical problem saw him
exit to the pits on lap eight and from then on it was Dunlevy in
command for his first win of the year. The event ran non-stop
with fast timer (14.09) Charlie Davis claiming runner-up honors
followed by Jeff Wilson, Derek Barnette, and Kim Dill.
Defending mini
stock/sports truck driver Eddie Flora became the third different
winner in his class as he kept his Store-N-Lock Chevy S-10 all the way
to the checker. Sixth place starter Kenny Snyder charged up to
challenge Flora when the caution came out when previous winners Eric
Snell and Gary Eaton Jr. tangled on the backstretch. Snyder continued
to dog Flora all the way to the checker but had to settle for second
with Eaton coming back to claim third with Shawn Sparkman fourth and
Snell fifth.
Heath White of
Springfield showed that his fast time (15.21) was no fluke as he
captured his first pure stock main of the year. Heath stole the
lead at the start and never looked back with Tom Williams, the opening
night's winner placing second followed by Bret Clark when came back
from an earlier spin to claim third. Bill Burba was fourth and Mike
South Jr. fifth.
The Tom Gill KOIL
Legends Cars made their second appearance of the year at Kil-Kare
Friday and Indianapolis driver James Robertson made the long trip
profitable again as he collected his second straight feature.
Al Renner and Jack
Jones cap. captured the heats In the feature Jones and Danny Jackson
brought the field to the line with Jackson taking the lead while fifth
place starter Robertson was on the move. He took over second place on
lap eight and lap eleven showed him as the leader and that is where he
stayed until the checker. Jackson was second with Jones third with
fourth going to Renner and fifth was Jeff Denny.
Brett Boykin tried
to put a stop to Gary Williams and Tim Haerr's dominance in the
compact cars but he fell short two spots when the checker waved. He
did lead for ten laps though as Williams and Haerr weeded their way
from the back of the pack toward the leading Boykin. With four laps to
go Williams took the lead and win with Haerr second.
Behind Boykin in third was Steve Barnhart and Shane Williams.
