Brunke Claims
Third Feature at Kil-Kare Speedway
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Ohio (6/18) -
In the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Kil-Kare Speedway Casstown's Tony
Brunke seems to be the driver to beat this year as he became the first
driver to score three feature wins so far. Friday night the young
driver started on the front row and quickly put his #29 out front. At
one time he had a half lap lead over the field until the caution came
out with three laps to go. That didn't seem to change his
momentum as he again pulled away from the field to score the win.Third
place finisher Mike Miller kept the pressure on Jerry Stapleton who
claimed second place money with fourth going to Don Mahaffey who held
off Ron Simpson who finished fifth.
A first lap crash
eliminated the cars of Virgil Powell and Russ Bob with Ron Simpson
also involved but he was able to resume the action.
One of the true
veterans of the track, Dick Dunlevy Jr. made a daring charge to front
move at the drop of the green flag in the E-Mods to emerge the leader.
Rob Garrett and Kim Dill brought the field out of turn four with
Dunlvey claiming the lead by the time they entered turn one. Garrett
held on to second place for five laps and then fast timer Charlie
Davis took over second and closed in on Dunlevy. Even though there was
two caution periods, Davis just couldn't get around Dunlevy and had to
settle for second. Garrett was third with Mike Carroll home fourth
with fifth to Derek Barnette.
The Mini
Stock/Sports Truck feature was a heart breaker for Kenny Snyder. With
the advantage of his front row starting slot, Snyder quickly put his
Mustang out front to build up nearly a third lap lead over the field.
Sixth place starter Gary Eaton Jr. was quickly moving up on Snyder
when Snyder lost it on turn two and slid off the track. This put Eaton
out front where he stayed to collect his fourth win of the year. Eric
Snell was a real close second with Shane Sparkman third, Eddie Flora
fourth and fifth was Snyder.
Springfield's Mark Heath started the evening off by posting fast time
(15.45) for the fourth time this year and then came back to put the
icing on the cake so to speak by capturing his third Pure Stock
feature of the year.
Eighteen pure stocks
took starter Don Beddies green flag with polesitter Heath taking
command. Last years champion Jeff Marsh held down second spot with
third being sixth place starter Mike South Jr. at the end of lap
three. Marsh and South put on a pretty good battle for the second
position with South ending up second and Marsh third behind winner
White. Bret Clark was also in the thick of action as well as tom
Williams. With smoke pouring out of his car, Clark claimed fourth with
Williams home in fifth position. Ton Cottrill had the misfortune of
spinning out twice but quickly brought his #76 right back out on the
track.
The Tom Gill KOIL
Legends Cars made their fifth stop of the season at Kil-Kare Friday
with heat winner Bryan Nuckles in the Columbus Motor Speedway
sponsored car cleaning house. Nuckles started off by leading Jon
Larkin and Dillon Oliver home first in the first heat race. He
then came back to start on the inside pole to put his red #59 out
front at the start of the feature and that is just where he stayed
until the checker. It was the second win of the year for the Grove
City resident. Danny Jackson started fourth and moved up to claim
second place money while Dillon Oliver tried to challenge Jackson for
second but had to settle for third. Toby Alfrey, winner of the second
heat was a close fourth and fifth was Al Renner.
In the second heat
behind winner Alfrey was Jackson and Renner.
The best way to
describe the Compact feature was simply wild. At the drop of the green
flag it was like a herd of hungry animals looking for food as the
field charged four wide into turn one. David Sagers showed as the
first lap leader. Lap two it was Jeff Pennington and lap three showed
Troy Patterson as the front runner. Lap five it was Brett Boykin in
front in his Celica and that is where he stayed to collect his first
feature of the year.
Second
place went to none other than defending champ Tim Haerr who started
way back in sixteenth spot. Claiming third was Gary Williams who came
all the way from nineteenth with fourth to Troy Patterson and fifth
was Allen Campbell.
Next Friday night,
June 25, will be the "Dayton 100" for the Late Models plus
the other divisions with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
