Bates Repeats at
Kil-Kare Speedway
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Oh (4/16) -
Vandalia's Ricky Bates is off to a super start in the NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Racing Series late model division this year at Kil-Kare
Speedway as he recorded his second straight feature win and the third
of his late model career at Kil-Kare. Driving The D&W Welding/Markland
Motorsports Monte Carlo Bates took advantage of his pole position
starting berth to out duel defending champion Sam Heckman for the lead
on the first lap.
Although the caution
flag flew three times slowing the pace, it didn't bother Bates one bit
as each time he pulled away from the field, putting quite a gap
between he and the rest of the competitors.
Heckman held down
second spot most of the way with sixth place starter Don Mahaffey
knocking on his rear bumper. With three laps to go Mahaffey and
Heckman momentarily bumped each other on turn two, slowing them just
enough to enable fourth place running Ron Simpson to sail by to claim
runner-up money. Mahaffey was third with Heckman fourth and Mike
Miller fifth.
Jason Mahaffey - #14 Emod Division
E-Mod track record
holder Derek Barnette appeared to be on his way to his first feature
win of the young season but Dayton's Jason Mahaffey had other
thoughts. After a first lap four car crash that eliminated four cars,
Barnette held down the front spot while Jerry Stapleton and Mahaffey
battled for second. Mahaffey finally took control of second place with
Dick Dunlevy Jr. moving up to challenge Stapleton. Dunlevy took over
third spot and Stapleton exited six laps later with mechanical
woes. At the checker it was the Affordable Auto Parts special of
Mahaffey collecting his first E-Mod feature win. Barnette, Dunlevy,
Ryan Dunlevy. and Dan Williams rounded out the top five.
Action no more than
started in the mini stock/sports truck feature when the red flag
halted the action when machines crashed on the backstretch. Xenia's
Shawn Sparkman took the lead on the restart with Kenny Snyder eunning
second and Shane Sparkman third. Urbans's Gary Eaton Jr. and his
Moore's Trucking Chevy S-10 from his sixth place starting slot. By lap
three he was second and set his sights on leader Sparkman. Lap five
showed him as the leader and that is where he stayed to collect
feature win number six of his career at Kil-Kare. Snyder was second
with John Morris third with fourth to Eddie Flora and fifth to Shawn
Sparkman.
Mike South Jr #72 and Heath White #6 battle down the backstretch
Mark Smith Jr. led
the eighteen car starting field in the pure stocks for the first six
laps and then it was Mike South Jr's turn as he put his Snap-On Tool
Monte Carlo into the lead to claim his third Kil-Kare career win. It
was a close finish as Heath White closed in on South and had to settle
for second as South beat him by only inches at the finish line.
Defending champ Jeff Marsh was third trailed by Bret Clark and Justin
Miller.
A Pair of Haerr!!! (Tim Haerr #8, Sonny Haerr #37, battle for the lead!)
It was a wild and
wooly compact feature as eighteen front-wheel drive cars took starter
Don Biddies green flag. Polesetter Shane Williams led the first lap
then veteran Sonny Haerr led the next three only to be passed by his
nephew Tim Haerr and then the stage was set for a wild finish.
Previous weeks winner Gary Williams and Tim Haerr swapped the lead
back and forth and on the final lap while lapping traffic Williams
slipped off the backstretch enabling Haerr to take the win. Williams
wasted little time in regaining and claiming the runner-up spot
followed by Sonny Haerr, Shane Williams, and Brett Boykin.
The KOIL legends
cars made their first appearance with a strong twenty-nine car field
which neccisated a b-main which was won by Jon Larkin of Bronston,
Kentucky. Heat wins went to Al
Renner, James Robertson, and Terry Scherz.
Renner and Robertson
brought the twenty car field to the starting line in the feature with
Renner taking the lead only to have the caution come out when six cars
tangled on turn two. Renner had the lead on the restart but
Indianapolis, Indiana's Robertson was out to collect his second
checker flag of the night as he put his machine in front on the
second lap to collect his first Kil-Kare win. Auburn, Kentucky's
Keeton Hanks claimed second after holding off the challenges of
Galloway, Ohio's Jeff Denny who was third. Renner, of Indianapolis was
fourth and Mark Sullivan of Greenwood, Indiana was fifth.
