Stapleton Scores Again at Kil-Kare
Speedway
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, Oh. (7/16) - Sam Heckman many
have had the fastest NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model Friday
night at Kil-Kare Speedway in time trials but come feature time it was
Jerry Stapleton being the fastest.
Heckman and Stapleton brought
the field to the starting line with Stapleton putting his brother
Carl's Monte Carlo ahead of Heckman on the first lap. From then on it
was the D'Burg Auto Body/Terry's Radiator Service sponsored #33 of
Stapleton all the way to the checker in the 30 lap event.
A turn three mix-up involving
Ron Simpson and Steve Foster on lap eleven was the only caution period
of the event. Ricky Bates was home in third with Ken Kohl having his
best finish of the season as he claimed fourth. Fifth went to points
leader Mike Miller who holds a mere four point lead over Heckman.
The E-Mod feature was certainly
a crowd pleaser with as many as five drivers running under a blanket
lap after lap as they tried to catch leader Mike Carroll. Carroll and
his McDonalds sponsored open-wheeler had his hands full all the way
with Kyle Jones and Dick Dunlevy Jr. trying to pass the leader.
Dunlevy slipped back to fourth with four laps to go but when the white
flag waved Dunlevy was back in second and as they approached the
finish line Dunlevy barely nosed out Jones for second with Jones
settling for third place money. Charlie Davis was fourth and fifth was
Jason Mahaffey who started fourteenth and coming on strong.
Probably the most improved
driver in the Mini Stocks/Sports Trucks is Gary Eaton Jr. and the
young Urbana driver has been showing the veterans the rear of his
truck in most of the events. He started third in his feature and on
lap two was the leader in his Moore Trucking sponsored Chevy S-10.
Eric Snell shot up from eighth to second on lap three. Snell tried to
catch Eaton bu Eaton just stepped on the throttle a little harder and
pulled away from Snell who claimed second with previous weeks winner
Eddie Florarthird followed by Kenny Snyder and Chuck Weaver.
The Pure Stock feature was also
a crowd pleaser with quite a battle for the top spots. First Tim Rauch
led the feature then Heath White and then there was the #31 of Tom
Williams who claimed the feature win. This was the fourth win of the
seaon for Williams and his Vogelsong Chiropractic Mont Carlo. Jamie
Sites was second with White limping hom in third. Mike South Jr. and
Bret Clark rounded out the top five.
Eighteen Legends Cars started
their main with Loveland's Danny Jackson taking the lead over Bryan
Nuckles and Keeton Hanks. Nuckles put his Columbus Motor Speedway
sponsored #59 out front on lap four to claim his third win of the
year. Jackson started to slow on lap nineteen and then dropped out.
Keeton Hanks took second place with Dillon Oliver third and fourth
was Toby Alfrey with Al Renner fifth.
Again it was a Williams and
Haerr show-down in the compacts with Gary Williams taking the win for
the fifth this year. Williams started eleventh while runner up Tim
Haerr started twelfth. Early leader Troy Patterson was third with Dave
Lecoccq fourth and Bret Boykin fifth.
Coming up Friday night, July 23
will be Championship Auto Race Series (CARS) Super Trucks and Baby
Grands along with the Late Models, E-Mods, Pure Stocks, and Compacts
with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
