Brunke Two In a Row at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, Oh. (5/6) - Troy's Tony Brunke appears to be the driver to beat in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late model division at Kil-Kare Speedway as he recorded his second straight feature win.

The event got off to a rocky start when Lester Miller spun on turn two just after the green flag was waved calling for a complete restart.
Veteran Dave Brandenburg led the first lap only to be spun on turn two which resulted in Mike Miller and Ron Simpson making contact. Simpson's car had considerable body damage as he exited to the pits to have the loose body parts removed. Miller was not as fortunate, if you can call it that, in that he sailed over Simpson and landed upside down resulting in considerable damage to his car.

Former pure stock standout Ken Kohl was in command on the restart with Brunke right behind. Kohl's lead only lasted five laps as Brunke put his Monte Carlo to the inside of Kohl coming out of turn four to take the lead and the win.
The surprise of the night was the performance of another former pure stock driver by the name of Darrell Norman. Norman set fast time of 14.258 and then was chasing down Brunke at the end of the 30 lapper to claim second place money for his best ever late model finish.  Same Heckman was third with Kohl fourth and Russ Bobb was fifth.

Former legend car driver Mike Broaddus is doing a superb job in the E-Mods but not enough to stop the ole pro of the division, Dick Dunlevy Jr. Broaddus led the first six laps of the feature but Mr. Dunlevy put his Ohio Trailer Sales open-wheeler around Broaddus on the outside on turns one and two and from then on there was no stopping Dunlevy. He began lapping cars like they wasn't even on the track as won by a large margin over none other than Mike Carroll who has been second on all three race dates this year. Rounding out the top five was Broaddus, Shawn Stroble and Derek Barnette
Dunlevy also recorded the fastest lap of the season with a clocking of 13.744 which is almost an average of 100 mile per hour around the three-eights mile track.
A new name appeared in the mini stock/sports truck winners circle as Urbana's Gary Eaton Jr. put a halt to Kenny Snyder's two straight win streak. Eaton led from start to finish in his Vital Signs and Graphics Chevy S-10 pickup but Snyder and his Ford Mustang was right on his rear bumper to claim second. Eddie Flora was third with Matthew Potter fourth and Aron Harshbarger fifth.

The pure stock feature was perhaps the most exciting and closely fought event of the evening as eighteen cars battled for position. Shawn Stansell, with one win to his credit this year had his hands full holding on to the number one position. Stansell led from the drop of the green but right behind him it was dog eat dog battle between Mike South Jr., Tom Williams, Jamie Sites, and Heath White with the rest of the field not far behind.
White worked his way into second only to have a problem when traffic was heavy while lapping cars. Sites just happened to be in the right place at the time as he took over second as White slipped back to fifth. When the checker waved it was Stansell barely beating Sites to the line with third going to South, Williams fourth, and White fifth. Sites set the fastest time of the year so far with a clocking of 15.110.

After a four car tangle at the start of the compact feature the first three laps saw three different leaders. Marvin Amburgy led the first lap then Randall Walton the second after which Brett Boykin in his Shingle Trucking  Celica took over to become the third different feature winner of the year. Donald Page claimed the runner-up trophy while first weeks winner Allen Campbell was third followed by Tim Haerr, and Randall Walton.

The bandoleros made their first ever Kil-Kare appearance with John Meyers and Alan Baker taking the heat wins.
Meyers came back to take the feature win over Doug Meyers followed by Justin Campbell, Richard Shaw, and Matt Kusmall.
The KOIL legend cars were also on hand with Toby Alfrey and Danny Jackson claiming heat wins.
Jackson came back in the feature in his Redbank Trucking sponsored car to take the feature win that had numerous spins and crashes. Second was John Memmer followed by Toby Alfrey, Byron Stowe, and Tony Walter.

Troy Patterson was the winner of the novelty hot dog eating event for the compact cars.

Next Friday night will be Senior Citizens Night along with Aladdin Shriners with the late models running a 40 lap feature along with the E-Mods, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks/sports trucks, and Compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
