Brunke And
Dunlevy Win Again at Kil-Kare
by Jerry
Wahl
Xenia, OH (5/20) - It was the same ole story Friday
night at Kil-Kare Speedway as Tony Brunke and Dick
Dunlevy Jr. repeated as winners in the NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series Late Model and E-Mod feature
respectfully.
Defending Late Model champ Sam Heckman set the
pace at the start of his feature to keep his
familiar #17 out front but third place starter
Brunke quickly moved into second and then began to
plan his strategy to pass Heckman. After three
caution periods Brunke moved to the outside and as
they approached traffic, he made his pass good and
again the St. Paris resident claimed the win, his
third in a row.
It was a little scary with two laps to go as
Ronnie Simpson spun on turn four and somehow the
fast approaching leaders made it through the smoke.
When starter Mike Stapleton waved the checker on
Brunke, Heckman was second followed by Darrell
Norman, new track record holder Bill Burba (14.124),
and Dave Brandenburg.
When it came time for the E-Mods, Mansfield track
champion Shawn Stroble and Mike Carroll brought the
field to the green. Stroble showed as the leader the
first three laps with Carroll and Dunlevy in hot
pursuit. Carroll took over on lap four with the
rapid moving Dunlevy right on his rear bumper.
Coming out of turn four on lap ten Dunlevy and his
First National Bank Mortgage sponsored machine was
out in front and after three caution periods it was
four straight wins for the New Carlisle resident.
For the fourth straight time Carroll claimed
runner-up money with Stroble third. Charlie Davis
and Shawn Gray battled all the way for fourth with
Davis just beating Gray across the line to claim the
spot.
Defending pure stock champ Tom Williams of Xenia
started the evening off by erasing Jamie Sites
15.110 track record with a clocking of 15.097 which
was an indication of what was to come in the
feature.
Sites and rookie Shane Williams brought the
eighteen car field to the line with Sites jumping
out front with Williams right behind and Bill Burba
in third.
Sites managed to hold on to the lead as three
cautions slowed the pace but after the final caution
and with four laps to go Williams stole the lead and
Sites had to settle for second. Rounding out the top
five were Burba, Jeff Marsh, and Mike South Jr.
The compacts got off to a wild start as six cars
tried to make it into turn two and they quickly
found out it just does not work as a number of them
piled up. Troy Patterson led the first lap with Dave
Lecocq then taking over and looked as if he just
might claim the win but Donald Page had other
thoughts as he took over with three laps to go,
claiming the win with Lecocq second followed by
Allen Campbell, Troy Patterson, and Randall Walton.
The the school bus Figure-8 was claimed by veteran
Butch Russell and the demolition derby by Joey
Carrico.
Nest Friday night will be meet the drivers night
along with all divisions and the Legend Cars. Gates
open at 6 p.m., racing at 7:30 p.m.
