Brunke and Dunlevy Kil-Kare Winners Again

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, Ohio (7/3) - The headline looks like a repeat of previous events at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night as Tony Brunke and Dick Dunlevy Jr. kept their win streaks in tact in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series features.
For Brunke of Casstown it was his fourth straight Late Model feature win  and for New Carlisle's Dunlevy it was his fifth straight E-Mod win.
It was the older and younger drivers starting in the front row as long time driver Dave Brandenburg started on the pole in his Dodge with the younger Ricky Bates alongside in his Chevy Monte Carlo.  Brandenburg claimed the lead on the first lap with third place starter Mike Miller moving into second with Bates third and fifth place starter Brunke dropping into fourth. They continued to run in that order until lap eleven and that is when Brunke and his Fast Racing Engines powered machine started to make his move.
The next lap saw him move to the outside just as he has done in previous weeks and there was no stopping him from advancing toward the front as he dropped Bates to third on lap twelve. Next he went after second place running Miller and moved him back a spot on lap fourteen. Still passing on the outside he eyeballed leader Brandenburg with lap sixteen showed him as the leader after waging a side by side battle with Brandenburg.
From then on to the checker it was the #29 All Star Graphics & Awards sponsored Brunke, claiming his fourth win in a row. Brandenburg held on for second place, his best finish of the season with sixth place starter Darrell Norman third followed by Miller and Bates. Bill Burba lowered his own track record of 14.124 down to 14.112 to be fast qualifier.

Three caution periods slowed the E-Mod feature but it certainly did not slow Dick Dunlevy Jr. down one bit. Jason Mahaffey and Mike Broaddus started on the front row with Broaddus taking the lead with Mahaffey tucked in right behind him for the first lap. Mahaffey showed as the leader on the next lap with Mike Carroll now in second and by lap five seventh place starter Dick Dunlevy Jr. was already in third spot. On lap seven he was in second and the next lap he was in the lead, putting a big gap between he and Mahaffey, Carroll, Charlie Davis, and Shawn Stroble who were fighting for positions.
When the checker waved it was the thus far undefeated Dunlevy taking his fifth straight win in his First National Mortgage Bank sponsored open-wheeler. Mahaffey picked up his first runner-up finish and Carroll was third. Davis and Stroble rounded out the top five.
Earlier in the evening Dunlevy eliminated the problem of a miss-firing engine to record the fast time in time trials with a clocking of 13.902.
In the Mini Stock/Sports Trucks feature Shawn Sparkman only enjoyed the lead for one lap as Gary Eaton Jr. came out of nowhere from his sixth place starting slot to show as the leader on lap two. From then on his Vital Signs & Graphics Chevy S-10 truck was on a mission as he held the front spot until the checker. It was his second win of the year.
Fast timer ( 14.030) Kenny Snyder was moving in on Eaton  at he Finish to claim second followed by Eddie Flora, Sparkman, and Matt Potter.
Pure Stock driver Jamie Sites has been a consistent top finisher in the features but a win always eluded him, that is until Friday night. Starting on the pole in the Isaacs Racing Photos sponsored Camaro out in front of the field and went on to score his first ever Pure Stock feature win. Hard charging Mike South Jr. held down second until fast timer (15.140) Tom Williams moved him back to third. South had the misfortune of losing a right front wheel with just two laps to go.
It was a jubilant Sites in victory lane. With Williams second, third was Jeff Marsh, fourth Heath White, and fifth was Shane Williams.
Earlier Sites picked-up his first checker in his class when he won the Australian pursuit over Burba, Marsh, and Williams.
In the Compact feature Joseph Holloway and Troy Patterson swapped the lead back and forth until Patterson went extra wide on turn four giving the lead to Holloway. With the pack bunched up 9th place starter Donald Page put his #70 out front to claim his second win of the year. Claiming second was Lecocq trailed by Tim Haerr, Randall Walton, and Allen Campbell.
Coming up on Friday, June 10, will be the annual "Dayton 100" for Late Models paying $1500 to win along with the E-Mods, Pure Stocks, and Compacts. Gates open at 6 p.m., racing at 8 p.m.
