Stroble Scores First Ever Win at Kil-Kare Speedway

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (6/24) - It was "open wheel" night at Kil-Kare Speedway featuring the USAC Ford Focus Midgets and a 50 lap E-Mod feature.
It certainly was a night E-Mod driver Shawn Stroble will remember for a long time as the former Mansfield Speedway champion scored his first ever win a Kil-Kare. He started the evening off by setting fast time of 13.914 in time trials which was a warm-up of what was to come in the $1500 to win 50 lap feature.
Shawn Gray and Kim Dill brought the 20 car field to the starting line with Gray taking the lead followed by Mike Broaddus, Terry Humphrey and Jason Mahaffey and Dill.
It was evident Stroble's fast time was not a fluke as he was on the move advancing up from his eleventh place starting slot. By lap five he dropped Dill back a spot as he went after fourth place runner Mahaffey, dropping him back and then it Humphrey who he disposed of three laps later. Next it was Broaddus followed by the chase for the lead.
With Gray holding on to the front spot which he enjoyed for nineteen laps at which time Stroble made an outside pass coming out of turn four for the lead. From then on it was Stroble's race to the checker while behind him all eyes were now on five time winner Dick Dunlevy Jr. Dunlevy was making moves through traffic trying to catch Stroble but time ran out as Stroble and his Sherwin-Williams sponsored machine claimed the checker first.
Shawy Gray had better luck than the week before when he crashed after receiving the checker flag as he claimed runner-up money with Dunlevy third. Jason Mahaffey was fourth and Terry Humphrey fifth.

Pure Stock driver Brett Clark was one happy camper as he ended a long dry spell by winning the feature. His win was not an easy one by any means as visiting Columbus Motor Speedway's Donald Parsons was right behind him holding down second spot with Mike South Jr. badgering him all the way. South did manage to squeeze by to take second with Parsons third. Jimmy Johnson and Shane Williams rounded out the top five.
The Compacts rounded out the regular Friday night divisions with another new name appearing in the winners circle as Randall Walton recorded his first ever win. Matt Jackson led the first two laps with Walton the next one and then Donald Page showed as the leader until he was sidelined along with Allen Campbell in a mix-up on the backstretch.
This put Walton back in the lead for the final five laps with he receiving the checker in front of Bo Hoelscher who had his best finish ever. David Shaw was third followed by Shawn Sparkman and Irvin Fugate.
The USAC Ford Focus Midgets made their first ever appearance at Kil-Kare much to the pleasure of the fans who gave them an overwhelming reception.
Tate Martz recorded the fastest time to hold the track record at 13.626 just shy of 100 mile per hour at 99.078 mph.
Heat wins went to Kyle Robbins, Stephanie Mockler, and Matt Westfall.
Though the action was slowed by three cautions due to spins and one red flag when Jeff Leeke flipped on the frontstretch when he ran over a spinning cars wheel. He was uninjured but out of competition.
Nick Wagner was the early leader, leading the first four laps with Ronnie Wuerdeman on his tail . The next lap showed Wuerdeman out front Brandon Hartsell and Wagner waging a battle for second.
When the checker fell it Wuerdeman taking the win, his first on the three-eights mile track but not his first at Kil-Kare as he had won some twenty plus quarter-midget features on the quarter-midget track.
Hartsell ended up second followed by James Robertson, Tate Martz, and Derek Fisher.

Next Friday night, July 1, The Hooters Pro Cup cars will be running a 250 lap event plus the Pure Stocks will also be running with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
