Brunke and Dunlevy Win Streaks Broken at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, Ohio (6/17) - Friday nights racing action at Kil-Kare Speedway had 100 race cars present to entertain the fans and that they did. By the time the checker flag waved on the Late Model and E-Mod features there were new winners in the winners circle as Tony Brunke had his four straight Late Model wins broken by Gary Estes and Mike Carroll stopped Dick Dunlevy Jr.'s five straight wins in the E-Mods.

Former track champion Dave Brandenburg and Ray Muncy paced the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Models to the green flag with Brandenburg putting his Dodge out front with John Stroble and Muncy running bumper to bumper right behind him. Muncy had the misfortune of hitting the turn one wall when his right front tire went down.
Crafty Brandenburg continued to set the pace while behind him there was quite a battle for spots between Mike Miller, Sam Heckman, Tony Brunke, and Gary Estes when fast qualifier Bill Burba (15.204) spun on the front stretch on lap sixteen.
After the restart Gary Estes poured the power to his Bond Machine sponsored Pontiac as he advanced toward the front. By lap twenty-one he had caught up to Brandenburg, sized him up, and made an outside pass going into turn one for the lead. Brandenburg in desperation of trying to hold off Estes pass spun on turn two and was delegated to the tail end.
With the laps winding down points leader Tony Brunke was trying to get to the front but time ran out and he had to settle for third spot behind second place finisher John Stroble. Sam Heckman claimed fourth and Ricky Bates fifth.
It was Estes first appearance of the season and in victory lane he commented "it seemed like a long long race but all the guys ran me clean".

Seventeen E-Mods started the feature with Shawn Gray and veteran Terry Humphrey on the front row but it was the younger driver Shawn Gray taking the lead with Derek Barnette and Humphrey third on the first lap. Fifth place starter Mike Carroll was in second by lap three and six laps later me passed Gray on the outside on turn one for the lead. In the meantime undefeated Dick Dunlevy Jr. who started way back in ninth was on the move. By the halfway mark he was in second and sizing up Carroll for the noted Dunlevy pass.
As the two approached traffic Dunlevy had the misfortune of being caught up in slower traffic while Carroll was able to put some distance over the chasing Dunlvey. As the white flag came out a four car crash on the front stretch that eliminated the cars of Jason Mahaffey, Donnie Hill, and Mike Broaddus also brought the caution flag setting up a one lap shoot-out between Carroll and Dunlevy.
Carroll was able to hold off Dunlevy to score his first win of the year in his McDonalds sponsored open-wheeler. With Dunlevy second third went to John Stroble, fourth was Derek Barnette, and fifth was Charlie Davis.

In probably the shortest Mini Stock/Sports Truck feature in Kil-Kare history as the event was cut to five laps as only four machines were present and two of them crashed on the first lap. Fast timer Kenny Snyder (14.061) and Eddie Flora locked together coming out of turn four and landed wedged together at the track exit ramp. Gary Eaton Jr. in his Vital Signs and Graphics Chevy S-10 won with Matt Potter second, Flora credited with third and Snyder fourth.

With $400 dangling in front of the Pure Stocks you would have thought there was a full moon with all the wild antics that caused seven yellow flags and the event called complete after the last caution.
Heath White and Jimmy Johnson started on the front row of what was to be a 40 lap feature. White got the lead with Johnson running third and like the Late Models, the other drivers behind them were battling for positions. After the third restart fast timer Tom Williams (15.204) was on the move from his 9th place starting spot.
White continued to lead and on lap seventeen Williams was in second and two more cautions followed. They restarted with Williams trying to make a pass on White on turns three and four when apparently contact was made and White crashed hard into the outside wall. Due to time restrictions the event was called complete and the finish reverted back to the last completed lap which gave White the win. Johnson was third with Mike South Jr. fourth and Jamie Sites fifth.

Donald Page added to his points lead in the Compacts by capturing his third feature of the year. Dave Lecocq was second followed by Frank McCubbin Jr., Allen Campbell, and Randall Walton

A full field of KOIL Legend Cars started their feature and the star of the event was thirteen year old John Memmer. The youngster held the lead all the way to take the win over Danny Jackson, Toby Alfrey, Byron Stowe, and Mike Amell. Heat wins went to Bryan Nuckles, Jackson, and Jack Jones. Nuckles and Jones were eliminated in a lap nine feature crash.

In Bandaolaros action Justin Hines captured the feature over Alan Baker, Eric Redmond, Justin Campbell, and Richard Shank. Hines and John Myers won the heats.

Racing resumes next Friday, June 24, featuring the USAC Ford Focus Midgets, a 50 lap E-Mod feature plus the Late Models and Compacts will see action with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
