Norman Takes Kil-Kare Late Model Win
by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (7/29) - Darrell Norman just happened to be in the right place at the right time Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway during the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model feature. Norman had been running in fourth position when the top two cars crashed and the third place running car pitted with electrical problems which put Norman in the number one spot.
Dave Brandenburg and Ronnie Simpson started on the front row with veteran Brandenburg taking the lead in his Dodge only to see the caution come out when rookie Keith Bales spun on turn two. When the green finally appeared Brandenburg once again took the lead with Simpson second but by lap three previous weeks winner Bill Burba was in second and kept closing the gap on Brandenburg.
By the half-way point It was Brandenburg, Burba, Tony Brunke who had started seventh, Norman, and Sam Heckman. Fast timer Brunke had just passed Burba for second and was alongside Brandenburg when Brandenburg lost a wheel resulting with both he and Brunke hitting the turn one wall. Brunke darted to the pits to repair his car but Brandenburg was not as fortunate as his car had to be hauled off the track.
Burba would have been the leader on the restart but he had to visit the pits to make a repair which put him on the tail-end for the restart with five laps to go.
Fourth place running Norman found himself in the drivers seat which he held until the checker to claim his first ever Late Model feature win. Sam Heckman was second with eighth place starter Ricky Bates third, Virgil Powell fourth, and fifth was Russ Bobb.

Brunke was fast timer at 14.380 with the dash being won by second generation driver Keith Bales. followed by Dave Brandenburg, Darrell Norman, and Ronnie Simpson.
For the second week in a row the E-Mod feature was a crowd pleaser with super close racing. Polesetter Dave Spencer led the first five laps while fifth place starter Shawn Stroble was on the move, quickly moving into second and the chase was on. Stroble and his Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finish machine showed as the leader on lap six with Mike Carrol moving into second and a swift moving Shawn Gray had advanced from 9th to third by lap eleven.
Two laps later he claimed second and started to chase down leader Stroble. Gray, who was fast qualifier at 14.022 was right on Strobles rear bumper with Carroll right behind them when Gray made contact with Stroble on the white flag lap with both cars spinning as well as Dick Dunlevy Jr. who did so when Derek Barnette lost an engine.
Stroble  won the shoot-out to the checker with Carroll second, previous weeks winner Terry Humphrey third, Jason Mahaffey up from eleventh fourth, and Charlie Davis fifth.
Kim Dill became the first female to win a dash at Kil-Kare as she took the win over Rob Stansell and Rodney Kreusch.
The Pure Stock feature had to be restarted as five cars piled-up on the first lap on turn four. Jimmy Johnson and Shane Williams led the field to the green with Johnson jumping out front followed by Bret Clark and fifth place starter Shawn Stansell. Stansell made an inside pass on Clark to steal second and then three laps later did the same to Johnson for the lead in his Affordable Auto Parts Camaro.
Previous weeks winner Tom Williams dropped Clark to third as he moved in on the leader and then eighth place starter Jamie Sites slipped by Clark. It was a close finish as Stansell claimed his fourth win of the season with Williams second, Sites third, Clark fourth, and Jeff Marsh fifth.
Heath White was fast timer at 15.240 but was eliminated in the lap one crash of the feature. Mel McMullen won the dash over Rusty Clark and Dave Taylor.
You never know who is going to come out the winner of the Compact feature until the checker falls as they make their charge to the front. Polesetter Ivin Fugate had the pleasure of leading the first two laps and then it was Bo Hoelscher out front. In the meantime sixth place starter Donald Page and eighth place starter Tim Haerr was working the field on their way to the leader. Haerr made another daring inside turn four pass to stake his claim on the lead in his Mahaffey's Auto Salvage sponsored machine to claim his second win of the season. Six time winner Page was second with Hoelscher third, Chip Haerr came from the tail-end to claim fourth, and fifth was one time winner Randall Walton.

Next Friday night, August 5, will be double 30 lap features for the Late Models with double points offered for the E-Mods, Pure Stocks, and Compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
