Burba
and Humphrey First Time Winners at Kil-Kare
by Jerry
Wahl
Xenia,
OH (7/22) - Friday nights NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series events at Kil-Kare Speedway
produced two first time winners as Bill
Burba and Terry Humphrey claimed their
respective features. Burba claimed his first
ever Late Model feature and Humphrey his
first ever E-Mod win.
Burba,
in his first season in the Late Models
earlier in the season recorded a new track
qualifying record and then Friday night put
the icing on the cake by beating veteran
Virgil Powell to the finish line to put his
#26 in victory lane.
Burba
started on the pole alongside five time
winner Tony Brunke with Burba taking the
lead. Dash winner Powell moved into second
with Brunke third followed by Ricky Bates
and Sam Heckman. Powell was being challenged
by Brunke on lap fifteen when contact was
made and Powell spun and Brunke pitted with
mechanical woes.
With
Burba in command Russ Bobb and Dick Dunlevy
Jr. were jockeying for fifth spot when Bobb
brought out the final caution when he spun
on turn one. Burba took the win followed by
Powell, Bates, Heckman, and Dave
Brandenburg.
Sam
Heckman posted fast time of 14.221 while
Powell led Dunlevy, Bates, and Heckman home
first in the dash.
The
E-Mod feature was perhaps the hardest fought
one all season as any one of the first five
place runners could have easily been the
winner of the 30 lap event. Fifty-nine year
old veteran Columbus driver Terry Humphrey
showed he still has plenty of spunk in him
as he first held off the challenges of Shawn
Gray, then Mike Carroll, and Shawn Stroble
who was able to pull up alongside of
Humphrey but was unable to make the pass.
Six
time winner Dick Dunlevy Jr. was weeding his
way toward the leaders when the second
caution came out when Charlie Davis smacked
the turn four wall and was put out of
action. From then on you could have almost
thrown a blanket over the five cars as they
were all trying to make a dast for the win.
With three laps to go Dunlevy started to
make a serious challenge on Humphrey but the
crafty Humphrey was able to shake off
Dunlevy who settled for second followed by
Stroble, Gray, and Carroll.
Dunlevy posted fast time of 14.267 while
Stroble won the dash over Dunlevy, Charlie
Davis, and Gray.
The
Pure Stock feature was almost as close as
the E-Mods as Harveysburg's Bret Clark had
all he could handle holding off former
winners Tom Williams, Jamie Sites, and Heath
White. Clark, a one time winner so far this
season started on the pole and right away
was challenged by Williams and Mike South
Sr. Clark was able to hold on all the way
with Wiliams taking second and Sites third.
Heath White stole fourth as he dropped the
elder South back to finish fifth.
White
was fast qualifier at 15.265 and also won
the dash followed by Shane Williams and Mike
South Sr.
Compact driver Dave Lecocq has been runner
up so many times he has stopped counting
them and Friday night was no different than
in previous weeks. He enjoyed the lead the
first four laps and then here came Enon's
Tim Haerr in the Mahaffey's Auto Salvage
Beretta to take the lead and win with Lecocq
again adding a runner-up finish to his
stats. Donald Page claimed third followed by
Mather Jackson and Randall Walton.
The
ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series were on
hand for the Knupp Tire 100 with former
Legend Car driver Brett Rowe of
Barboursville, West Virginia in his Front
Rowe Racing Chevy S-10 claiming the win.
Loveland's Danny Jackson who competes in the
Legend Cars at Kil-Kare claimed second with
Paul Hahn third.
Former
Kil-Kare Mini Stock champ Ron Wells was
running in third spot when when was
eleminated with three laps to go when he
tried to avoid a stalled truck on turn one
as he hit the wall in trying to do so.
Next
Friday night, July 29, will be Harley
Davidson night along with a penny scramble
and big wheel race for the kids plus a full
racing program with the gates opening at 6
p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
