Brunke and Dunlevy Continue to Rule at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (7/15) - The Tony Brunke and Dick Dunlevy Jr. show continued Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway during the NASCAR Dodge Racing Series events. Both drivers have been dominate in their respective divisions and they continued to add to their portfolios as Brunke claimed the late model feature win for the fifth time and Dunlevy became a six time winner.

Ricky Bates got the jump on Ken Kohl at the start of the late model feature to lead the first twenty-three laps but the posse behind him was catching him each lap.
Dunlevy, in only his second late model start of the season had recorded a new track record of 14.062 erasing the 14.124 held by Bill Burba and was one of those on the prowl. Burba by the way was driving Mike Millers car but spun early in the event and placed eleventh.
There was a lot of fierce fighting for positions in front of Dunlevy as numerous times sparks flew in the door to door activity. Meanwhile Brunke wasted little time in his All Star Awards & Trophy's sponsored #29 as he made his outside passes and advanced from fourth to second on lap three. Russ Bobb tried his best to hold off Sam Heckman but by this time the seventh place starter Dunlevy was weeding his way through traffic to be in third spot by lap twenty.
It was Brunke, Bates, and Dunlevy and it appeared that would be the finishing order but a lap twenty-seven spin by Virgil Powell brought the caution out and the field was able to bunch up. It was Brunke's race but the real battle was for second as Dunlevy barely nosed ahead of Bates at the line to claim second with Bates third, Heckman fourth, and Ken Kohl fifth.
Dunlevy captured the fast car dash over Heckman, Powell, and Brunke.
The E-Mod feature lined up with Kil-Kare rookie Barret Tamasovich and Derek Barnette bringing the field to the line with Tamasovich putting his bright yellow #11A in front. He had one of his best runs going so far but soon he was to hear the roaing engines of Charlie Davis, Mike Carroll, and Dick Dunlevy moving in on him.
Carroll showed as the leader on lap nineteen as had his sights on his second win of the year but he knew he had his work cut out as Dunlevy was right behind him. The second caution came out with five laps to go and from then on it was a true display of masterful driving between the two veterans as they ran side by side without touching right down to the checker. Dunlevy claimed the win in his Ohio Trailer Supply open-wheeler with Carroll getting the honor of being runner-up for the fifth time. Tamasovich held right in there to claim third with another veteran driver, Terry Humphrey fourth and fifth was Shawn Gray.
Dunlevy had fast time of 14.174 but it was Charlie Davis claiming the dash win over Terry Humphrey, Mike Carroll, and Dick Dunlevy.
In the pure stock feature former compact driver Shane Williams and Derek Louderbach led the field with Williams took the lead with fourth place starter Tom Williams, no relation, jumping into second. Lap five showed Tom the leader and Shane held right in there as he showed he can run right with the more experienced as he held on to second until lap eighteen. Sixth place starter Jamie Sites had been dogging Shane for second and finally made his pass good to claim second behind Tom Williams in the Complete Automotive sponsored #31. Shane was third followed by Louderbach and Jeff Marsh who was fast qualifier at 15.105.
Matthew Jackson had the pleasure of leading the compact feature for the first nine laps and looked like he might claim the runner-up trophy, that is until the last lap when Tim Haerr slipped by for second. Earlier Donald Page had taken the lead which he held right down to starter Randy Markland's checker to score his fifth win of the year. Third was Jackson with Dave Lecocq fourth and Bo Hoelscher fifth.
It was the first ever trailer race at Kil-Kare and fifteen wild creations started the event and when the checker waved it was none other than pure stock driver Danny Suffron taking the win.
Next Friday night, July 22, the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will be at Kil-Kare along with the other divisions with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
