Dunlevy Two In A Row At Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (4/15) - As the ole saying  goes, give Dunlevy and inch and he will take a mile and that seemed to be the story Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway in the 40 lap $600 to win E-Mod feature.
Friendly rivals Kim Dill and Don Fleming Jr. brought the field to the starting line only to see the yellow come out shortly after the green when Derek Barnette spun on turn four and exited to the pits. On the restart Fleming surged ahead with Jason Mahaffey coming from fourth to second but here they came, Mike Carroll and Dick Dunlevy Jr.
Carroll started fifth and fast qualifier Dunlevy started nineth but by lap three the two were in command of the front two spots with Carroll leading and Dunlevy second just like the week before. Carroll led with Dunlevy stalking him and just like the previous week he made an inside pass between turns one and two to show as the leader on lap twelve. They continued to run that way to the checker with Dunlevy picking up his second straight win and Carroll his second brides maid finish, second. Jason Mahaffey had been running a strong third until an oil leak sent flames shooting from his car. Don Fleming took over third and as the laps wound down, Kim Dill moved up to challenge Fleming and placed third with Fleming fourth and fifth was Shawn Stroble.

In the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Models Ricky Bates who won the feature one year ago on this week-end looked like he just might repeat his win but it was not to be. Bates and veteran driver Dave Brandenburg set the pace for the start with Bates taking the lead with Brandenburg second. Bates put some distance between he and Brandenburg
After a lap thirteen mixup that eliminated fourth place running Mike Miller, sixth place starter Tony Brunke was on the prowl, passing on the outside as he usually does. Brandenburg spun on lap twenty-two moving Brunke into second on the restart and two laps later he was in front.  Brunke took the win with Bates second, last years champ Sam Heckman third followed by fast timer Don Mahaffey and fifth was previous weeks winner Virgil Powell.

Kenny Snyder had fast time in the mini stocks/sports trucks however it was fourth place starter Gary Eaton Jr. out front on the second lap and looked to be on his way to the feature win. snyder had other ideas for he and his Mustang as he closed in on Eaton, passing him on the outside on lap thirteen for the lead and his second straight win. Eaton was second with Shawn Sparkman third, Matt Potter fourth, and John Morris fifth.

The pure stock feature was filled with plenty of  door to door, bumper to bumper action and in the end Shawn Stansell was one happy driver as he scored his first ever feature win.
Stansell may have led every lap but he had a bunch of hungry drivers right behind him with some six drivers battling for position. When the checker was it was former champ Jeff Marsh coming from sixth to claim runner-up with eighth place starter Jamie Sites claiming third for the second week in a row. Previous weeks winner Heath White was fourth and last years champ Tom Williams was fifth.
In the wild compacts Randall Walton led the first lap with Dave Lecocq showing as the leader for the next six laps. In the meantime, past champ Tim Haerr who started eighth as he chased down Donald Page for second on lap six and then passed Lecocq for the lead and win. Page was second with Lecocq third followed by previous weeks winner Allan Campbell and Brett Boykin.

Next Friday night will see the spectator street drags in action along with the Legend Cars, Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night, and all classes in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly series with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and Legends heats at 7:30 p.m.
