Estes and Gray Repeat at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (8/19) - It was return visits
to victory lane Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway and repeat wins
for Late Model driver Gary Estes and Shawn Gray in the E-Mods as
both recorded feature wins on a night that was action packed with
seven divisions seeing action before one of the largest weekly event
crowds this season which was also Greene County Public Library
night.
Estes in his Bond Machine sponsored
Firebird started the night off by setting fast time of 14.282 with
the roll of the dice dictating an eight car inversion for the
feature which put Estes starting eighth.
Just like the week before, Bill Burba
and Russ Bobb held down the first two spots at the drop of the green
as they fought for the lead until lap seven when a mix-up occured
which saw the cars of Les Miller and Ken Kohl eleminated and Bobb
sent to the tail end.
Burba continued to lead but Estes was
quickly moving toward the front as he passed car after car and then
moved in on Burba, making an outside pass on lap thirteen good to
take the lead which he never gave up. Ricky Bates dropped Burba back
a spot on laptwenty-one followed by Sam Heckman as Burba began to
fade back. Nineth place starter Dave Brandenburg moved up to claim
fourth with Burba fifth at the finish line.
Darrell Norman in the Wright
Construction sponsored machine won the dash over Heckman, Estes, and
Kohl.

E-Mod driver Derek Barnette was pumped
up for a feature win Friday night as he felt it was time to do so
and for the first eleven laps of the feature it looked like with a
little more luck his wish would come true. He enjoyed the lead with
Jason Mahaffey on his rear bumper when all of a sudden Barnette's A
to Z Painting machine went up in white smoke and win wishes with it.
Prior to this, eighth fast qualifier
Shawn Gray had been working on his competition as he was doing like
Estes in the Late Models, advancing toward the front from his eighth
place starting berth. Gray put his Burco Trucking open-wheeler out
front to take his second in a row win. And just like the week before
the ole veteran of the speedway Dick Dunlevy Jr. passed traffic to
catch Gray but again had to settle for second place money. Charlie
Davis snatched third place with Shawn Stroble fourth and Mahaffey
fifth.

The fast car dash was a four lap wheel
to wheel bumper to bumper event with another ole veteran coming out
on top of the pack. Terry Humphrey and his Humphrey Engines and Dyno
Service special led Gray, Stroble, and Davis home first.
The Mini Stocks/Sports Trucks were
back on the program with Gary Eaton Jr. setting fast time of 14.466
and then claiming his fourth feature win in his Pro-Comp Engines
powered Chevy S-10.
It was an all truck race with Matt
Potter taking the lead followed closely by Shawn Sparkman with
Sparkman showing as the leader the next seven laps as Eaton moved
in on him to take the lead which he never gave up.
It was a three truck battle right to
the checker as Eaton took the win with Sparkman second, Eddie Flora
third, Potter fourth, and Shane Sparkman fifth.

When the Pure Stocks hit the track you
never know who is going to cross the finish line first as usually
there are five or six cars all running very close at the end looking
for the win and it wasn't settled until they came out of turn four
Friday night.
Former champion Tom Williams jumped
into the lead and held it all the way until the last few feet to
the checker. Eighth place starter Jamie Sites worked his way up to
second by lap four and was dogging Williams for the lead when they
came upon a slower car coming out of turn four for the checker.
Williams went on the outside of the slower car and Sites charged on
the inside to come out the leader at the line to record his second
win of the year in the Ole English Out Fitters/Tailrwiz sponsored
Camaro. With Williams second, rounding out the top five was Shane
Williams, Heath White, and Jeff Marsh.
Heath White took the dash followed by
Mike South Sr., Sites, and Jeff Marsh.

Seventeen Compacts lined up for their
feature and when the checker waved it was a very elated Randall
Walton doing what other drivers have not been ablt to, beat the
Haerr brothers. Ivin Fugate led the dirst two laps and Walton took
command to take the win in his Affordable Auto Parts car asthe Haerr
brothers, Tim and Chip battled for second with Tim doing so with
Chip third followed by Matt Jackson and Donald Page.

The gals took to the track for the
second time this season in the Compacts and this time it was Donna
Haerr driving Chip's Pizza and Company sponsored car to victory as
previous weeks winner Tina Haerr met up with a big corner marker
tire to finish fourth. Second was Jerry Kay McCubben with Melanie
Stacy third and fifth was Amber Isaacs.
The Tom Gill Chevrolet KOIL Tour
series were on had with both the Bandolaros and Legend Cars.
In the Bandolaros Megan Reitenour was
the star of the division as she made a clean sweep by winning the
heat and then capped the night with a feature win. Following
Reitenour in the feature was Alan Baker, Doug Myers, Justin
Campbell, and Casey Moore.

Danny Jackson and Toby Alfrey captured
the Legend heat events and when it came to the feature it Alfrey
scoring his first win at Kil-Kare
Bill Bickley led the first two laps
and then Tony Wachter the next three but after that it was the #05
out front with a good lead until the caution came out on lap
twenty-three when a car spun on the frontstretch. This put two
former winners right behind Alfrey, Brian Nuckles and Danny Jackson
for the restart. Nuckles chance to win went by the wayside when the
green flag waved as he lost his front bumper on turn one and
according to KOIL runles you can't run without one so to the pits he
went. Alfrey held off Jackson for the win with Jonas Larkin third,
Wachter fourth, and Tony Steffen fifth.
