XENIA , Ohio – The points chase is heating up at Kil-Kare Dragway, setting the stage for a summer of great racing. Case en point, Gary Randolph of Loveland and his super pro win, which he topped off with a prefect .500 light. Then there’s pro winner William Prater of Huber Heights, who came out to race after a seven-year break. These men make it look easy, but it was full day of work for them to get there. Randolph’s quarter final win came against Jon Pickering of Troy. Randolph nailed his 5.60 dial in, Pickering was close running a 6.02 on his 6.01 dial in. Other quarter final runs were Tony McFall of Tipp City in 85 Firebird winning over Brent Angles of Hillsboro in his 80 Monza, who broke out. Robert Manker of Xenia hit his 6.03 dial in and got the win over Dean Howard of New Carlisle, who ran 6.29 on his 6.27 dial in. In the semi final, Randolph got the bye run and Manker broke out in his run against McFall, setting the stage for the final. Randolph dialed in at 5.58 this time around, running a 5.60 and recording his perfect light. McFall ran 5.69 on his 5.68.
The theme for the pro quarter final was ‘break out,’ as Prater got the double break out win over James Sanders of Riverside in hid Firebird. Rich Wilson of Kettering in his ‘83 S-10 got the double break out win over Dave Baker of Xenia in his Z-28; John Engle of Xenia got the bye run. In the semi final Prater got the bye run in his ’74 Camaro; Wilson hit a .500 light getting the win over Engle. Prater’s win in the final came after he ran a 12.31 on his 12.30 dial in, with Wilson breaking out.
In the sportsman bracket, quarter final winners included Doug Caplinger of Xenia in his ’79 Malibu getting the double break out win over William Brewer of New Carlisle in his ’69 Cuda. Walt Shade Jr. of Xenia red lighted, giving the win to Joe Zimmer of Dayton and Nathan Baker of Xenia got the better light and the win over Howard Ledford of Kettering. In the semi-final, Zimmer got the bye run and Baker broke out in his run against Caplinger, who moved to the final after running a 13.22 on his 13.21 dial in. In the final, it was a close drag race, with Zimmer running a 13.68 on his 13.67 dial in. But it was Caplinger victorious with a reaction of .562 to Zimmer’s .579. In pro bike quarter finals, Dave Beavers of Urbana ran dead on his dial in getting the win over Brad Shellhaas of Springfield, who broke out of his 9.24 dial in. Scott Sheppeard of Tipp City got the win over Russ Witham of Fairborn; Burt Exman of Englewood got the bye run. Sheppeard moved to the final with the bye run for semi-finals, and it was Beavers over Exman to set up the final round. Beavers ran a 9.86 on his 9.83 dial in, Exman and 8.78 on his dial in of 8.72. In the final, Sheppeard broke out on his ’01 Honda giving the win to Beavers on his ’90 Kawasaki.
The junior dragster quarter final Ryan Jenks of Jamestown got the win over the redlighting Brian Cripps of Miamisburg; Julie Duty of Vandalia grabbed the double break out win over Brian Emory of Beavercreek. Last week’s points leader Ben Browder of Fairborn hit a red light, passing the win onto Ceslie Shellhaas of Springfield, Bruttany Adams of Beavercreek got the bye run. In the semi final, Adams got the double break out win over Shellhaas, Duty also broke out on her run against Jenks, who hit an 8.49 on his 8.48 dial in for the win
In the final it was Jenks for the second week in a row. He repeated his 8.49 run, this time dialing in at 8.47. Adams ran a 9.37 or her 9.33 dial in. Jenks leads in points, with Browder right behind him. High school quarter final action had Mikey Collier of Dayton getting the double break out win over Aaron Sprauer of Kettering; Joe Hoskins of Fairborn moved up after Andi Terrell of New Carlisle broke out and last week’s winner Sam Bunch of Beavercreek redlighted giving the win to Michael Sturgill, also of Beavercreek. In the semi final, Sturgill got the bye run in his ’96 Beretta. Hoskins moved on to the final in his ’97 Neon, running a 16.41 on his 16.36 dial in. Collier ran 16.99 on his dial in of 16.95. In the final, Sturgill scored the double break out win over Hoskins. Sturgill is now tied for second in points with Bunch.
