Kil-Kare Dragway 1166 Dayton-Xenia Rd. XENIA, Ohio – Track officials and racers at Kil-Kare Dragway all deserve credit for running a perfect light, as the bracket one final went down the strip right at the midnight curfew. While the final round drivers were wore out from the round robin runs, the end result was all brackets got to finish. That task seemed doubtful after a few hours of down time for track clean up.
In super pro it was Lance Anthony of St. Paris that nailed down the win in his ’02 Racecraft dragster, with a speed of 140 mph. Anthony’s quarter final win was a dead on run at a 4.90 dial in against Jim Smith of Beavercreek, who’s run hit the red light. Other quarterfinal action saw Ken Bigler of Beavercreek in his ’69 Nova run dead on his 6.28 dial in for the win against Tony McFall of Tipp City in his ’85 Firebird. McFall ran 5.67 on his 5.66 dial in. Danny Bettinger of Kettering won his round against Marvin Resibois of Lynchburg, Bettinger running a 5.93 on a 5.92 dial in and clocking 115 mph. Resibois ran a close 5.40 on his 5.39 dial in at 124 mph. Jack Duty Jr. of Vandalia moved to the semifinal after running dead on his 5.95 dial in his Monza. Wayne Angell of Fairborn in his ’67 Camaro broke out, with a 5.81 on a 5.82 dial in. In the semifinal it was Anthony’s win after Bigler broke out; Anthony ran a 4.92 on his dial in. It was Duty who broke out next, with the win going to Bettinger. In the final, Bettinger ran a 6.08 on his 5.93 dial in; Anthony a 5.09 on his 4.90 taking the win.
In the pro bracket quarterfinal, Randy Smith of Washington Courthouse won the double breakout run against Steve Collier of Xenia. Smith ran 10.53 on his 10.56 dial in; Collier red lighted, handing it over. Tom Scarpelli of Xenia won his round, running a 10.08 on his 10.02 dial in against Gwayne Honeycutt of Urbana. Honeycutt ran 10.23 on his 10.22 dial in. Brett Randall of Xenia caught the bye run, moving on to the semi’s. Randall broke out his semi final run, but won after Scarpelli red lighted, Smith had the bye run. The final was a close race, but it was Randall in his Zombie Racing ’69 Camaro that grabbed the win, running a 9.91 on his 9.90 dial in at 129 mph. Smith ran a 10.56 on his 10.54 dial in, with a speed of 125 mph.
Ricky Shepherd of Dayton won the Sportsman bracket final, but going back to quarter final action Shepherd ran dead on his 13.01 dial in his ’99 Chevy. Nathan Baker of Xenia broke out in his ’69 Mustang, hitting 13.07 on his 13.08 dial in. Paul Pierce and Dana Pratt, both of New Carlisle went up next, with Pierce getting the win in his ’98 Ram truck after Pratt broke out in his ’71 Nova. Roy Hess of Xenia red lighted in his ’66 GTO, handing the win to the breaking out Joe Zimmer of Dayton in his ’71 Camaro. Zimmer moved on to the final after winning a double break out run against Pierce; Shepherd got the bye run. Shepherd got the final running a 13.04 on his dial in, reaction time of .530. Zimmer ran his 13.67, only reacting at .593.
Pro bike quarter final racing saw Mike McGrath of Dayton pick up the bye run to move on; Dave Beavers of Urbana picked up the round win after Wes Johnson of North Hampton broke out on his Kawasaki. Russell Stewart of North Hampton moved on to the semi final after running a 9.07 on his 9.05 dial in against Burt Exman of Englewood, who ran an 8.63 on his 8.61 dial in. Chance Russell of Dayton took the win over Bob Nugent of Fairborn, running a 9.61 on his 9.50 dial in. Nugent ran 9.49 on his dial in of 9.26. In the semi final, Stewart broke out on ’97 Kawasaki; Beavers took the win running a 9.80 on his 9.78 dial in. Russell pulled an exact repeat of his ET, moving up to the final on his ’81 Suzuki over McGrath, who ran an 11.63 on his 11.46 dial in. In the final it was Russell for his second win in a row, running a 9.52 this time around. Beavers ran 9.84 on his 9.78 dial in.
In Junior Dragster, Ryan Jenks of Jamestown won his quarter final run against Jake Browder of Fairborn, runner up for the day Matt Spradlin of Springfield won over Tyler Vance of New Carlisle. Payton Filson of Fairborn won over Justin Whitt of Fairborn and Michael Bloomfield moved up after a win against Steve Collier of Dayton. Bloomfield also earned the Top Tree Award after catching a .503 light in round two. In the semi final Filson red lighted handing the win to Spradlin. Filson ran an 8.21 on a 8.20 dial in at 79.22 mph; Spradlin ran dead on his 9.48 dial in with a 69.14 mph speed. Jenks went to the final after running a 8.51 on a 8.47 dial in at 77.13 mph; Bloomfield broke out with a 7.95 on his 7.97 dial in, with a sped of 79.92mph. In the final round it was Jenks who landed the double break out win. He ran a 8.48 on his 8.50 dial in with a 77.58 mph speed; Spradlin ran a 9.44 on his 9.47 dial in with a speed of 68.79mph.
In high school competition, Nick Barrett of Beavercreek went to the semi final after beating Jason Parriman of Dayton; Sam Bunch of Beavercreek won his round against Joe Hoskins of Fairborn and Mikey Collier of Dayton won over Michael Sturgill of Beavercreek, who broke out in hi ’96 Beretta. In the semi final, Bunch ran a 15.50 on his 15.40 dial in putting him in the final over Barrett, who ran 16.41 on his dial in of 16.34. Collier got the bye run.
