Brandenburg Claims Kil-Kare Finale
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (9/8) - Springfield's Dave Brandenburg became the ninth different driver to claim a late model feature win this season at Kil-Kare Speedway as the track ended the racing season. There were some tense moments throughout the night as several drivers battled for the points championship, especially in the modified division. For Brandenburg who qualified fourth fastest and with a four car inversion this put him on the pole for the start of the Langs Chevrolet/Mazda 30 lap feature but all eyes were on points leader John Vallo and Tony Brunke who was within striking distance of catching Vallo. A first lap incident put Vallo into the outside wall and to the pits for repairs. With Vallo still in the pits when the event got underway Brandenburg put his Dodge out front with Brunke right behind him. Brunke knew the pressure was on him as if he could pass Brandenburg and take the win and providing Vallo did not return to the track he, Brunke would tie with Vallo for the points championship. With the track rule being that a car cannot re-enter the track under green flag racing Bruke saw his hopes fade when the caution came out on lap twenty-five and the yellow #21 of Vallo reappeared on the racing surface. As Tim Allensworth and Bob Stansell were eliminated on the second attempt to start the event and were credited with no laps completed so all Vallo had to do is complete one lap and that would move him up two spots and unofficially result in a six point lead over Brunke who paced second behind Brandenburg in the feature. For Brandenburg who was the 1994 late model champ it was a jubilant night as the veteran driver has led on previous nights only to see someone else claim the checker first so naturally he was all smiles in victory lane. Brunke who is know for his outside passing and with one feature win for the season was only 21 seconds behind Brandenburg at the finish with third going to Russ Bobb who was the 2002 track champ. Finishing fourth was third generation driver Ryan Dunlevy who has worked his way up from the quarter midgets to being the 2001 pro stock champ and now wheeling the family owned #11 while his father Dick continues to heal from an earlier accident at another track. Claiming fifth was last years pure stock champ Jamie Sites who earlier in the evening scored a heat win. Brunke had fast time of 13.985 with the other heat win going to Gary Estes. The air was heavy as the Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds took to the track as five time feature winners Shawn Gray and Shawn Stroble were tied in points so who ever crossed the finish line first would be the track champ. It was Tim Allensworth and Shawn Gray bringing the field to the line with Stroble and Terry Humphrey in the second row. Gray quickly shot into the lead with Humphrey right behind him and Stroble third. The trio ran that way until Stroble began to set up Humphrey for a pass which he tried the outside coming out of turn four but the two made contact and Stroble made contact with the outside wall which ended his chance to chase Gray to the checker. Stroble made a dash for the pits only to return while the caution was out where he verbally exchanged words with Humphrey and then retired to the pits. Gray continued to lead all the way with Humphrey finishing in second and Allensworth third. Kim Dill had a strong run as she placed forth after holding off the continued challenges of Jason Mahaffey and Neil McClelland who chased her across the line rounding out the top six. Humphrey had fast time of 14.040 with the heat wins going to Charlie Davis and McClelland. Xenia's Tom Williams had little trouble claiming the Kil-Kare sport stock championship as he started on the pole of the twenty lap feature and ran away from the field to take the win, his seventh, by 3.837 seconds over second place finisher Heath White. Derek Louderbach was third with fast timer Dave Lecocq fourth and Jeff Marsh was fifth. Lecocq timed in at 15.166 with the heat wins going to Bret Clark and Jason "Jughead" Evans. Beavercreek's Randy Walton may have had fast time in the Oakley Blacktop compacts but it was the Haerr brothers claiming the spotlight in the feature. Chip Haerr jumped into the lead for the first three circuits but Tim took over the front spot from there and continued to lead to the checker as he claimed his sixth feature of the season. With Chip second Walton was trying to catch the leaders but time ran out with Walton finishing third and also clinched the track championship. Fourth was Chris Boggs and fifth was Troy Patterson. Walton's time in time trials was 15.196. As this event brought to a close of the 2006 racing season, Kil-Kare Speedway management would like to say a special "thank you" to all the fans, drivers, owners, sponsors, photographers, track workers, and especially the news media, all of which contributed to a successful racing season.
