Dunlevy Jr. Tops Late Models at Kil-Kare Speedway

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (5/5) - Veteran driver Dick Dunlevy Jr. of New Carlisle captured his first NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature of the season at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night.
Ricky Bates and defending track champ Sam Heckman brought the field to the line for the start of the Langs Chevrolet/Mazda sponsored late model feature only to see the yellow come out as polesetter Bates spun on the frontstretch. On the restart the green didn't stay out long as Russ Bobb spun resulting in another complete restart.
The third attempt seemed to be the charm with Bates jumping into the lead followed by third place starter Dunlevy. Bates set the pace but third place Dunlevy was riding right behind him trying to figure out a way to pass the Riverside Auto Parts sponsored car of Bates. A lap ten incident involving Tony Brunke brushing the frontstretch wall and then smacking the turn one wall which halted the action didn't seem to bother Bates as he continued to hold the front spot after the restart.
Lap sixteen proved fatal for Bates as he bobbled just enough on turn four to enable Dunlevy to charge past him to take the front spot in his Turbo Blue sponsored machine to hold the front spot to the checker. Sam Heckman held down third spot most of the way with Bill Burba riding right behind him but Gary Estes was on the move. First he passed Burba for third then Bates for second and settled for runner-up money in his Superior Auto Sales sponsored car. Heckman wound  up fourth with Burba fifth.

The Muffler Brothers of Xenia E-Mods had their Super Friday 40 lap $600 to win feature sponsored by R&L Carriers.
Mike Broaddus and Shawn Stroble led the field to starter Mike Stapleton's green flag with Stroble, in a brand new car after crashing his previous mount at Mansfield Speedway last week stole the lead. Stroble put some distance over second place running Broaddus who was challenged by Jason Mahaffey who moved into second on lap four. Stroble continued to set the pace but getting the fans attention was the yellow #91 of Shawn Gray. Gray started seventh but had moved into second by lap and had Terry Humphrey who had started fifth right along with him.
Gray pulled up alongside of Stroble several times before he was able to make an inside pass on turn four to snatch the lead. Gray put some distance between he and Stroble but with five laps to go a caution bunched up the field. On the restart Stroble came on strong as he challenged Gray to the checker, settling for second place with Humphrey third followed by Mahaffey and Broaddus. For Gray and his Video Central sponsored car it was his second straight win.

The small town of Harveysburg is getting a reputation of producing winners in the Sport Stock class. Previous weeks winner Jason "Jug Head" Evans claimed the win and this week Rusty Clark in the Harveysburg Towing Camaro was first to the checker.
Mike South Jr. and Clark started in the front row with Clark taking the lead going into turn one with South riding second. Mike South Sr. didn't let the two front runners out of his sight as he ran right with them but when the checker appeared in was Clark, South Jr., South Sr., followed by Jeff Marsh and Bret Clark.

The Compact feature was a hum-dinger which was not settled until the last lap and then it was close right down to the finish line. Matt Jackson and Chris Clark set the pace for the start with Jackson taking command while the rest of the pack fought for positions all fifteen laps. It looked like Jackson just might take the win but coming from tenth position was a rookie on the prowl. Jerry Lachman in only his second appearance behind the wheel or a race car was a man on a mission as he wormed his way toward the leader. He had moved into second by lap eight and was closing the gap rapidly when the white flag appeared. He came on strong coming out of turn four and just nipped Jackson at the line for his first ever win. Jackson was second trailed by Tim Haerr, Randy Walton, and Bo Hoelscher.

The KOIL Legend cars made their first appearance of the season and the fans were not disappointed a least bit with the action the scaled down cars provided. Toby Alfrey and Bryan Stowe captured the heats but the feature was one action packed event.
Madison Rogers and Rob Jones brought the twenty car field to the green flag with Rogers taking the lead but on the move from back in the pack was Bryan Nuckles who was in second when the yellow flew on lap five. Nuckles slipped by Rogers for the lead on the restart but Rogers rebounded on lap ten when he surged ahead and from then on it was anybody's guess as to the outcome would be. The two diced back and forth with Nuckles in the Columbus Motor Speedway sponsored car won by a whisker with Jack Jones stealing second with Rogers third followed by Stowe and Tony Steffen.

Also making their first appearance of the season was the KOIL Bandoleros with Matt Kussmaul and Sloan Henderson claiming the heat wins.
For most of the way in their feature it appeared Sloan would make a clean sweep of the night but the last lap of the feature changed things. She had been leading right up until the white flag when Justin Campbell put on move on her coming down for the checker to dampen her spirits as he was first to the line with Sloan third as Mitchell Wilhelm claimed runner-up.

The Powder Puff gals closed out the night and it looked like Amber Isaacs would make it two wins in a row but a 360 spin cost her the front spot. Teresa Boggs took the win with Isaacs second, Renne Sanlity third, and Wendy Brunke fourth.
The Hooters Pro Cup cars invade Kil-Kare next week with regular racing resuming the following week.
