Brunke Rules Kil-Kare Friday

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (5/26) - The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late model Langs Chevrolet/Mazda sponsored feature at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night produced the third different feature winner. Tony Brunke of Casstown held off the challenges of fellow competitors Dick Dunlevy Jr. and Gary Estes to record his first feature win of the season.
Dave Brandenburg and Ricky Bates brought the field to the line to start the thirty lap event with the ageless Brandenburg putting his Dodge out front when action was slowed when Bill Burba spun on turn four.
While Brandenburg continued to set the pace after the restart a royal battle between fast timer Dick Dunlevy Jr. and Brunke as the two ran side by side lap after lap. Finally on lap fourteen Brunke put a pass on a trick he learned in the past from Dunlevy. Coming out of turn three Brunke shot under Dunlevy coming out of turn four to take over second with Dunlevy falling in right behind.
The next lap Brunke passed Brandenburg for the lead with Dunlevy following right along, dropping Brandenburg to third. The pace was slowed on lap twenty one when Ricky Bates spun on the backstretch but once back underway Brunke remained in front.
As the laps wound down all of a sudden ninth place starter Gary Estes had moved up to challenge Brandenburg and Dunlevy. He pulled alongside second place running Dunlevy but Dunlevy held on to the second spot to finish runner-up behind Brunke. Estes in his first feature of the year was third with Brandenburg fourth and Bates nosed out Sam Heckman for fifth.
Dunlevy posted fast time of 14.129 while the dash went to Ricky Bates and the went heat to Gary Estes.
Fifth fast E-Mod qualifier Shawn Gray of Columbus had the advantage of the five car inversion which put the two time winner on the pole with Jason Mahaffey alongside for the feature start.
Gray shot into the lead with Charlie Davis second, and Mahaffey third but here came fifth place starter Terry Humphrey moving into third. The caution came out on lap three when Mahaffey spun after a tap by another competitor. Mahaffey was coming on strong as he was in third by lap fourteen, third the next lap but he was challenged lap after lap.
In the meantime Gray had a comfortable lead when the checker waved as he claimed his third win of the season. Mahaffey was runner-up with Humphrey third, Davis was fourth, and Shawn Stroble fifth.
Humphrey had fast time of 14.243 with the dash going to Jason Mahaffey and the win went to Gray.
Chad Smith ruled the School Bus events as he won both the Figure-8 event and the demolition derby.
