Estes Claims Second Win at Kil-Kare Speedway

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (6/30) - Gary Estes, the "Miamisburg Flash" claimed his second NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series late model feature sponsored by Langs Chevrolet/Mazda at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night.
By virtue of the roll of the dice the number five came for the inversion for the 30 lap feature which put fifth fast qualifier Estes on the pole with fourth fast timer Bill Burba along side for the start.
Estes put his Weiler Welding sponsored "Green Machine" out front at the drop of the green for the start of another close and hotly contested event. With Estes in the lead riding right behind him scrambling for positions was Dick Dunlevy, new track record holder Jamie Hunt, John Vallo, and Burba.
Lap eleven proved to be a nightmare for some of the drivers as no less than three caution flags appeared before they could complete lap twelve. First Russ Bobb and Ricky Bates tangled with Bobb sent to the tail. On the next attempt to restart Bobb, Jamie Sites, and Charlie Davis tangled with Davis pitted with a busted radiator. Once again a restart was attempted but Tim Rauch who was making his "06 debut spun.
Finally with action back underway Estes continued to set the pace but again the action was furious behind him as seven cars ran bumper to bumper lap after lap. They continued to run that way until lap twenty when again the caution flag waved when Russ Bobb tapped Ricky Bates sending Bates into the outside wall and out of competition.
The torrid pace continued after the restart with Hunt trying to get around Dunlevy to no avail as Vallo tried the same on Hunt. The final caution came with five laps to go when Bill Burba spun on turn four.
Dunlevy tried again to move on the outside of Estes but could not pull off a pass as Estes put a little daylight on the field to take the win followed closely by Dunlevy, Hunt, Vallo, and Sam Heckman to round out the top five.
Hunt set a new track record of 13.949 but it was Dunlevy winning the dash and heat wins went to Dave Brandenburg and Jeff Marsh.

It seemed like Jason Mahaffey night in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored modified class as the second generation driver won his heat and then came back to capture his first feature win of the year in his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored machine.
Mahaffey and three time winner Shawn Gray started on the front row with the cagy Gray falling in right behind him with Kyle Jones right on Gray's bumper. For Jones it was his first appearance of the year and he sure let his competitors know he was back as he and the two front runners ran as if under a blanket.
Veteran Terry Humphrey wasn't far behind the trio until he spun and had to restart on the tail but he quickly went to work weeding his way toward the leaders.
The second caution slowed the pace with seven laps to go when Neil McClelland, Jamie Brenneman, and Rodney Kreusch tangled.
From then on it was a shoot-out to the finish as Gray tried to pull a pass on Mahaffey but Mahaffey was barely able to hold him off and then Kyle Jones tried to pull one on Gray but he too didn't have the horsepower to do so. And then here came Charlie Davis into the act with four laps to go. Mahaffey took the win with Gray right on his bumper and Davis nipped Jones for third at the checker with fourth going to Jones and fifth was Shawn Stansell who was running right along with the above mentioned.
Shawn Stroble was fast timer with a time of 14.091 but could only muster up a sixth place finish in the feature. Gray won the dash while Mahaffey and Derek Weatherhead were heat winners.
Former track champ Tom Williams of Xenia sure knows the fast lane around the 3/8ths mile track as in the sport stock feature he almost ran away and hid from his fellow competitors. Driving the Fry's Home Improvement sponsored machine he was long gone in the feature taking the win by a safe margin over runner-up Rusty Clark in the Harveysburg Towing machine. Former compact driver Dave Lecocq, behind the wheel of the former Jamie Sites driven machine had his best finish when he claimed third. Rookie Jug Head Evans was fourth and fast timer Mike South Jr. was fifth.
Clark and Evans captured the heats.
It was a guess who type of event in the Oakley Blacktop sponsored compact feature. Four cars set the stage all the way for an exciting finish and exciting it was as tempers flared.

Many time winner Tim Haerr of Enon put his Mahaffey Auto Salvage Beretta out front but it was his brother Chip Haerr running second with Randy Walton and Gary Williams running like a pack of hungry hounds right behind him. Track record holder Walton tried and tried to get around Tim but each time Tim showed as the leader. Williams took over third place from Chip about half way through the event but Chip was not about to give up his spot without a battle. And battle it was as they came out of turn four for the checker Chip made a last second effort to catch Williams  and the two bumped which sent Williams into the outside wall which heavily damaged the front-end of his car.
That is when tempers flared with Williams throwing his helmet at Chip when he came back around the track.
The finish order was Tim Haerr, Randy Walton, Gary Williams, Chip Haerr, and Matt Jackson.
Coming up Friday, July 7, will be the Langs Chevrolet Shoot Out with double points offered in all classes and it will be Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night with all DARF members admitted free of charge. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
