Estes Whips Vallo Friday at
Kil-Kare Speedway
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (6/16) - After being rained-out
so many times this season, Kil-Kare Speedway finally received the
blessing of Mother Nature with a warm dry night that attracted the
largest crowd of the season so far for the weekly NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series events.

Seventeen late models were on hand with
current point leader Dick Dunlevy Jr. of New Carlisle posting fast
time of 14.129. Defending champ Sam Heckman, also of New Carlisle
won the first heat while rookie to Kil Kare, Nathan Herron of
Mechanicsburg held off the challenges of last years pure stock champ
Jamie Sites of Vandalia to capture the second heat.
With a four car inversion for the
feature this put Jamie Hunt on the pole with veteran John Vallo
alongside, second fast qualifier Gary Estes inside second row and
fast timer Dunlevy making up the first two rows.
Vallo quickly put his "Black Widow" #21
out front at the drop of the green with Hunt running right along on
the tail of Vallo with Estes and Dunlevy nose to tail in pursuit.
Five laps later Estes powered around Hunt on the outside to take
over second as Dunlevy made the same move three laps later to drop
Hunt to fourth. Estes began his move on Vallo, sizing him up each
lap as to where he could best pass Vallo and entering the first turn
on lap twenty two he put his Bond Machine "Green Machine" out front.
From then on it was Estes of Miamisburg
to the checker first to claim his first win of the year in the Langs
Chevrolet/Mazda sponsored feature. Vallo held on to second spot with
Dunlevy third, Hunt fourth, and Dave Brandenburg fifth.

Eighteen modifieds took to the clock in
the Muffler Brothers of Xenia division with Urbana's Shawn Stroble
setting quick time of 14.003. Former pure stock driver Shawn
Stansell of Kettering has been outstanding in his rookie season in
the modifieds as he claimed the first heat win over two tough
challengers, Terry Humphrey and Jason Mahaffey. The second heat went
to a rookie from Vandalia. Derek Weatherhead held off Dan Williams
and Gary Estes to record his first ever win at Kil-Kare.
Charlie Davis and Shawn Gray led the
field to starter Mike Stapleton's green flag with the "Yellow
Hornet" of Gray taking the lead with Davis second. Stroble moved
into second one lap later and then from then on it turned out to be
the Shawn and Shawn show.
Although three caution periods slowed
the pace the duo continued their torrid battle for the front spot.
Gray showed as the leader every lap but Stroble was trying every
which way to get around the determined Gray. When the checker waved
it was Gray of Columbus in the Architect Glass sponsored machine
adding another win to his portfolio. With Stroble a close second
Terry Humphrey placed third with Barret Tamasovich and Kim Dill
rounding out the top five. For Tamasovich and Dill it was their best
finishes of the year.

It was Sport Stock
Super Friday for the sport stocks with Dayton's Tom
Williams, former track champ setting fast time of 15.445.
Mike South Sr. of South Charleston
captured the first heat with Dayton's Tony Cottrill claiming the
second one for their first heat wins of the season.
Former feature winner Rusty Clark of
Harveysburg and Mike South Jr. led the field to the green for the
special forty lap event with Clark taking the lead followed by South
and Jeff Marsh. South and Williams tangled on lap five which ended
South's bid for a win as his car received rear-end damage. Marsh
took over second with South Sr. third with Mel McMullen running
fourth.
They ran in that order until lap twenty
nine when South Sr. spun on turn four. With action back underway
Clark and the Harveysburg Towing 1j claimed the win with Marsh,
Jason Evans, Shane Williams, and Bret Clark taking fifth.

Dayton's Randy Walton was the fastest
of the Oakley Blacktop sponsored Compact division with a time of
14.996, good enough for a new track record as he erased Tim Haerr's
record of 15.170.
The feature was a wild and torrid event
with three cars running bumper to bumper and side by side for
positions. Tim Haerr jumped into the lead from his outside front row
starting slot with Walton and Chip Haerr battling for second. The
trio continued to run under a blanket with Walton slipping a little
wide on turn four on the white flag lap enabling Chip to secure the
second spot.
Tim collected another win in his
Mahaffey Auto Salvage famous #8 with brother Chip second and Walton
third. Ron Sagers and Troy Patterson rounded out the top five.
In the powder puff event former winner
Amber Isaccs led at first but soon was passed by Tanya Boggs for the
lead. Boggs continued to lead but Donna Haerr was on a mission, a
mission to catch Boggs and she did just that in a thrilling finish
at the line as just barely nosed out Boggs for the win. Isaacs was
third and Wendy Brunke was fourth.

The IKO Mini Cup racers made their
first stop at Kil-Kare this season Friday night with Alex Webb of
Jeffersonville, Indiana and Dykan Presnell of Severville, Tennessee
taking heat wins.
Webb led the first five laps of the
feature with Presnell taking control and control he did as he lapped
car after car. Webb was second followed by Logan Ruffan of
Brentwood, Tennessee, Courtney Hannah of West Chester, Ohio, and
Taylor Webb of Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Next Friday, June 23 will be Open Wheel
Friday featuring the Ford Focus Midgets, WSOA wing Sprint Cars, and
Modifieds with a special appearance of the Vintage American Race
