Bates Becomes Fifth Winner at Kil-Kare

Xenia, OH (7/7) - It was double points night Friday at Kil-Kare Speedway for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series which drew a fine field of twenty one late models to the Greene County oval on Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night and the fans were treated to a full night of racing as six classes of cars provided the action.

Bates and former track champion Tim Rauch brought the field to the green flag for the start of the Langs Chevrolet/Mazda sponsored thirty lap late model feature. However the caution waved almost immediately as Ronnie Simpson and Bobby Justus tangled going out of turn two which resulted in heavy damage to the Justus machine. The restart didn't last long as Dave Brandenburg and Russ Bobb tangled on the backstretch with Bobb eliminated.

Finally with action back underway Vandalia resident Ricky Bates put his Riverside Auto Parts sponsored #8 out front to stay there all the way but it certainly was not an easy win by any means. Trailing right behind the young driver was four seasoned drivers just waiting for Bates to succumb to the pressure but he kept his cool and kept the four previous feature winners behind him to claim starter Mike Stapleton's checker first for his first win of the season.

Claiming second was two time winner and current NASCAR Division III points leader Dick Dunlevy Jr. of New Carlisle with opening nights winner John Vallo of Fairborn home third. Fourth went to one time winner Tony Brunke of Casstown and fifth was Miamisburg's Gary Estes, winner of the previous two features.

Dick Dunlevy and Russ Bobb were the heat winners.

Earlier in the evening during time trials Columbus resident Tim Allensworth set a new track record of 13.925 erasing the record of 13.949 set the previous week by Jamie Hunt.

You might say a crippled car can't keep Shawn Gray out of the winners circle in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored modified feature. When the green flag waved on the field for the start of the thirty lap event front row starters Mike Stradling and Neil McClelland waged a side by side battle for the lead with McClelland finally surging ahead but the Wolfe's were coming after him so to speak.

Barret Tamasovich was chasing McClelland but on the move was newcomer Chad Pendleton who started sixth and was up to third when the caution light came on for a spinning car. On the restart fourth place riding Shawn Stroble sailed by everybody to take the lead and it looked like the fast qualifier was about to pick up his first win of the season but all of a sudden he spun on turn two which sent him to the tailend for the restart.

Prior to that four time feature winner Shawn Gray had moved into second on lap twelve and had been catching Stroble until a trailing arm broke on the car making it hard for Gray to keep a straight line. However the spin of Stroble was a blessing for Gray as he was able to manhandle his Architect glass sponsored open-wheeler to maintain the lead to claim his fifth win of the season and to add points to his number one position. Tamasovich was second followed by Pendleton, with fourth going to Stroble who was coming on like gangbusters and fifth was Shawn Stansell who earlier in the evening had hit the wall while going for the lead in his heat race.

Stroble was fastest in the modifieds with a time of 14.020 while the heat wins went to first time winners Chad Pendleton and Kim Dill.

Xenia's Tom Williams may not have been the fastest qualifier in the sport stocks as he qualified sixth fastest but come feature time it was a different story. Williams in his Vogelsong Chiropractic sponsored #31 took the lead but action was shortly stopped when Mike South Sr., and Jason Evans tangled with Evans hitting the outside wall very hard putting both cars out.

Williams built up a good lead while the drivers behind him jockeyed for positions. Former compact driver Mel McMullen had his best showing to date with a second place finish with Bret Clark third, fast timer (15.530) Derek Louderback fourth and fifth was Mike South Jr.

Heat wins went to Bret Clark and Jason Evans.

The Oakley Blacktop compacts got off to a flying start as they ran three wide through turn on and two with a side by side battle between Troy Patterson and Frank McCubin Sr. leading the pack. Eleventh place starter Randy Walton was rapidly weeding his way toward the leaders and showed as the leader on lap six with Bo Hoelscher right behind him but Hoelscher hit the wall on lap later and was out. Former winners Jerry Lachman and Tim Haerr were on the move trying to catch Walton but it was Walton and his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored #5 taking their third win of the year with Lachman second, Haerr third, Matt Jackson fourth, and fifth was Justin May. Haerr had fast time of 14.925 for a new track record erasing that of Walton at 14.996.

The young drivers of the KOIL Bandoleros were on hand and the star of the show was none other than thirteen year old Sloan Henderson of Franklin. She won here heat race and then in the feature held off the aggressive male drivers to take the win over Matt Kussmaul, second heat winner John Myers, Justin Campbell, and Dustin Sword.

Rounding out the evening was the KOIL legend cars with a twenty two car field taking the green flag for the twenty lap event. Jason Dunn took the lead but soon it looked like a traffic jam on turn one as some eight cars piled up. One of the car eliminated was former winner Bryan Nuckles who had earlier won his heat and had just moved into second when the traffic jam happened.

On the restart Dunn continued to lead but fast timer (15.217) Toby Alfrey of Miamisburg who warmed up earlier with a heat win had other thoughts for Dunn as he put his #05 out front to take the win over third heat winner Jon Larkin with Brandon Dunn fourth and fifth was Bill Bickley.

Next Friday night, June 14, will be the famous trailer race at Kil-Kare in addition to another full program of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly series events with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
