Stroble Scores Third Win in Kil-Kare's "Open Wheel Friday" Ehrgett and Tolbert Also Winners
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (7/28) - It was Open Wheel Friday at Kil-Kare Speedway featuring the USAC Ford Focus Midgets, WSOA winged sprint cars, and Kil-Kare modifieds sponsored by Key Bank, Allstate Insurance, and Muffler Brothers of Xenia. Modified driver Shawn Stroble of Urbana seems to be the driver on a mission in recent weeks as Friday night he scored his third straight feature win in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored feature. Previous weeks runner-up Barret Tamasovich and one time winner Jason Mahaffey brought the eighteen car starting field to the line for the start of the fifty lap event. Mahaffey edged ahead of Tamasovich only to see the yellow caution lights come due to a spin by Jamie Brenneman which resulted in a complete restart. Again Mahaffey put his Affordable Auto Parts open wheeler in front as the event officially got underway but the challengers were riding right behind him. Tamasovich, Terry Humphrey, Dave Stacy, and Shawn Stroble were all running in a tight knit group as they jockeyed for positions. Humphrey took over second spot and challenged Mahaffey for the lead with the veteran driver in the Humphrey Engine Service special claiming the lead on lap twelve as Stacy in his Stacy Race Cars house car and Stroble waged a side by side battle for second spot. Seventh place starter Stroble was on Humphrey's rear bumper when they came upon a slower car which blocked Humphrey and Stroble put his Sutphen Towers machine in command . When starter Mike Stapleton waved the checker flag it was Stroble claiming the $1,000 first place money with Humphrey second followed by Stacy, Mahaffey, and Tamasovich. Heat wins were posted by Humphrey and Shawn Stansell. The USAC Ford Focus Midget feature saw nineteen cars start the twenty-five lap feature that had plenty of wheel to wheel and side by side activity. It was a see-saw battle for the win which was not decided until the last lap. Tony Main showed as the leader the first four laps with Tate Martz and Ricky Ehrgott trying for the lead as the three drivers ran three wide through turns three and four with Ehrgott taking the front spot with Zach Schiff charging into second. A lap twenty-one caution slowed the pace but when racing resumed Schiff picked his lane and shot by Ehrgott but as they came out of turn four for the checker Ehrgott retaliated by darting inside Schiff for the win. Following Ehrgott and Schiff were Chet Gehrke, last years winner Ronnie Wuerdemann, and Jason Robertson rounded out the top five. Casey Riggs, Ehrgott, and Tate Martz were heat winners. The old racers of the Vintage American Race Cars were also on hand and ran two exhibition events giving the fans a chance to see what the cars of yesteryears looked like. The WSOA winged sprint car feature rounded out the program which turned into a banner night for sixteen year old Tom Tolbert as he won his first ever sprint heat and then capped the night with his first feature win. Tolbert took the lead at the drop of the green which saw the caution come out when Josh Burdette hit the frontstretch wall and was sidelined. Tolbert put his 2-T machine in the number one spot all the way with Chad Livingston riding second until lap twenty-three when Livingston hit the wall which ended his night on the hook. Trailing Tolbert at the checker was Talon Stevens, Zach Gibson, Terry Gibson, and Paul Buckingham. Heat wins went to Terry Gibson and Tolbert. The next event on the Kil-Kare Speedway schedule will be the late model Dayton 100 sponsored by Langs Chevrolet/Mazda paying the winner #1,500. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
