Russ Bobb Tops Kil-Kare Late Models
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (7/21) - Veteran driver Russ
Bobb of Beavercreek dominated the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late
model class Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway. The 2002 track
champion started the night off by capturing his heat event, the
first of the season and then came back in the Langs Chevrolet/Mazda
sponsored feature to record his first win of the season.
Bobb and current points leader Dick
Dunlevy Jr. of New Carlisle started in the front row of the thirty
lap event with Bobb taking the lead with Dunlevy and third place
starter Gary Estes of Miamisburg waging a side by side battle for
second with Dunlevy managing to hold a slight lead over Estes while
Bobb continued to set the pace.
Dunlevy, who is in contention for the
NASCAR Davison III points championship had his chance of padding his
points lead when he and Tim Allensworth made contact on the
backstretch with Dunlevy heading for the pits and out of further
competition.
Bobb continued to lead after the
restart but three time winner Gary Estes was hounding him every lap
until contact was made causing Bobb to spin on lap eighteen and
Estes sent to the rear of the field. This put Fairborn's John Vallo
in second spot where he made a couple of attempts to pass Bobb but
Bobb pulled away from him each time. When the checker flag waved it
was Bobb and his Jade Tool Company sponsored Monte Carlo taking the
win with Vallo collecting second place money. Dave Brandenburg of
Springfield, also another former track champ brought his Dodge home
third with fast qualifier (14.086) Bill Burba of Eaton fourth and
fifth was one time winner Tony Brunke of Casstown.
Vandalia's Jamie Sites, last years pure
stock track champion and a rookie in the late model class this
season captured the second heat, his first ever in the late models.
Columbus modified driver Barret
Tamasovich has been a consistent top runner all season but checker
flags just seemed to elude him, that is until Friday night when he
won his first ever heat event. He started on the pole of the Muffler
Brothers of Xenia sponsored modified feature and quickly put his
open-wheeler out front at the start of the thirty lap feature.
It took three restarts to get the event
underway and was a night points leader and five time winner Shawn
Gray would rather forget. First he spun on turn four at the drop of
the green and then on the restart made hard contact with the
backstretch wall
which did heavy damage to the right
front and read-end of his car. Charlie Davis was the next spin
victim as he looped his mount at the start of the second lap.
Terry Humphrey and Kim Dill were right
behind Tamasovich every lap as eighth place starter Shawn Stroble
was inching his way toward the top three. On lap ten he passed Dill,
then went after Humphrey of which he dropped to third on lap
thirteen and then watch out Tamasovich because Stroble was the
fastest on the track. Stroble, of Urbana then put his Sutphen Towers
sponsored machine out front two laps later to maintain the lead to
make it two wins in a row.
It was Tamasovich, Humphrey, Dill, and
Jason Mahaffey rounding out the top five. Heat wins went to
Tamasovish and Neil McClelland, his first in the modifieds. Stroble
had fast time of 14.058.
The Harveysburg posse known as Jason
Evans and Rusty Clark have scored feature wins this season but their
third member, Bret Clark has gone winless until Friday night. Bret
started on the pole with former compact driver Dave Lecocq alongside
but it was the red #63 of Clark who jumped out front at the start.
Derek Louderbach tried to catch Clark but had the misfortune of
spinning on lap sixteen. Strong running Shane Williams then took
over second after starting fifth but had to look at the rear bumper
of Clark's Harveysburg Towing Camaro as they crossed the finish
line. With Williams home second another Williams by the name of Tom
had charged from eighth to collect third place money with Lecocq
fourth and fifth was Mike South Jr.
Tom Williams was fast qualifier at
15.443.
Dave Sagers and Ron Sagers started on
the front row of the Oakley Blacktop sponsored compact feature with
Dave showing as the leader the first two lap. His lead was short
lived as seventh place starter and four time feature winner Randy
Walton then took over the front spot and was well on his way to
another win, that is until Tim Haerr entered the picture. Haerr was
running second and looking for a way around Walton as they entered
the first turn on the last lap Haerr squeezed by Walton to take the
lead and his second win of the year in his Mahaffey Auto Salvage
sponsored car. Walton was second followed by Bo Hoelscher, Matt
Jackson and Dan Suffron.
Coming up Friday night, July 28, will
be Open Wheel Friday featuring the USAC Ford Focus Midgets, WSOA
Winged Sprint Cars, and Modifieds with the gates opening at 6 p.m.
and racing at 8 p.m.
