Allensworth Claims USG Dayton 100
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (8/4) - It was a long haul from Coshocton, Ohio for late model driver Tim Allensworth but in the end it was a very worthwhile and prosperous one as he claimed his first ever feature win at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday. Not only was it his first ever win here but it just happened to come in the tracks biggest event of the season for the late models as he won the 100 lap USG sponsored Dayton 100.
Chad Pendleton and Tony Brunke led the twenty five car starting field to the green flag for the start with Pendleton taking the lead with third place starter Allensworth right behind him for second followed by Brunke, Dick Dunlevy, and Dave Brandenburg. Pendleton and Allensworth ran nearly bumper to bumper as did Brunke and Dunlevy who finally got around Brunke for third spot on lap six. The top five continued to run very close until the first caution which turned into a red flag stoppage when a three car incident on the backstretch eliminated the cars of Chad Poole and Gary Estes.
The battle continued after the restart with Shawn Stroble in his first late model start riding in fifth spot having his hands full holding off Brandenburg and fast qualifier Bill Burba along with John Vallo who was on the move toward the front. Meanwhile, and six more caution periods later Allensworth and Pendleton continued to pace the field with all the front runners all running very close together.
Lap fifty-five put an end to the hopes of last years winner Dick Dunlevy for a repeat win as he had a tire deflate which caused him to make contact with Stroble as they spun and Dunlevy departed to the pits for a tire replacement but his night ended fourteen laps later when he lost power and stopped on turn four.
Another caution appeared on lap seventy seven when Brandenburg spun on turn four, however after each restart Allensworth kept focused, not giving Pendleton a chance to jump him on the restarts as the duo continued their almost bumper to bumper challenge. Brunke continued to hold down third position but he had Stroble, Vallo, and Jamie Hunt right behind him and then just what Allensworth did not want to see happen, a caution flag with two laps to go when Dr. Cal Busch spun on turn two.
This set the stage for a two lap shoot-out as Allensworth had six strong cars right behind him all capable or making a mad dash toward the front but it definitely Allensworth event as he crossed the line first in his Raco Transmission sponsored machine to claim the $1,500 first place money. Pendleton was runner-up followed by Brunke, Stroble, Vallo, Hunt, Burba, Joe Hill, George Lindsey, and Russ Bobb all on the lead lap.
Bill Burba had fast time of 14.156 while the heat wins went Jamie Hunt and Gary Estes.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored modifieds took to the track for their thirty lap feature with Barret Tamasovich and Jason Mahaffey leading the field. Tamasovich took the lead with Mahaffey, a one time winner so far racing side by side with Tamasovich with Mahaffey putting his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored open-wheeler in the lead on lap eight with Charlie Davis, Shawn Stroble and Terry Humphrey riding right behind Tamasovich.
Stroble advanced to second as fast timer Humphrey was coming on strong but a tap to the #01 machine of Tamasovidh sent Humphrey to the tailend but that didn't last long as he was again passing cars as he worked his way toward the front. Mahaffey took the win with Stroble second and Humphrey was third with fourth going to Davis and fifth was Shawn Gray.
Fast timer Humphrey (14.110) won his heat with Shawn Stansell also a heat winner.
It was one happy young driver in the Kil-Kare sport stocks feature as Shane Williams has come close to winning a feature but when the checker waved it was always someone else claiming the glory. Friday night was a different story as he claimed his first sport stock feature win after a hard battle holding off Tom Williams. Shane led every lap, surviving two caution periods, first when Tom Williams bumped Rusty Clark who spun and put T. Williams on the tail and the second when second place running Derek Louderbach bumped Tom Williams who was challenging Louderbach for second.
This gave T. Williams second place for the restart as Louderbach headed for the pits. With only two laps remaining, Shane Williams really had the pressure on him from former track champ and four time feature winner T. Williams. Shane and his D'Burg Auto Body sponsored Camaro was able to hold the front spot for the win with T. Williams second, with Mike South Sr. third followed by Rusty Clark and Mike South Jr.
Fast time went to Tom Williams at 14.130.
Paul Holly had the privilege of leading the first three laps of the Oakley Blacktop sponsored Compacts while previous winners Randy Walton and Tim Haerr were busy picking off the competition. The duo threaded their way through traffic as they chased down leader Holly. The scoreboard showed Walton and his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored #5 as the leader with Haerr not far behind in second. The two ran that way right down to the checker flag as Walton claimed his fifth win of the year and Haerr claimed runner-up honors in his Mahaffey Auto Salvage sponsored machine. Bo Hoelscher was home in third place followed by Ivin Fugate while early leader Holly was fifth.
The next event at Kil-Kare will be EMT-Firefighters night with all firehouse families admitted free of charge to the grandstand with all divisions in competition. All divisions will be in action plus a special stretcher cot race for the EMT's and firefighters will be held with $500 going to the winning team. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
