Bobb Claims Second Win at Kil-Kare by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (8/18) - It was an action packed program on 3M/Pepsi/DARF night at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night with plenty of good close racing action. In the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late model feature sponsored by Beavercreek's Langs Chevrolet/Mazda Bob Stansell and Jamie Sites brought the field to the starting line in the 30 lap event. Kettering's Stansell led the first ten laps with former track champ Russ Bobb of Beavercreek advancing from fifth to second. Bobb then took command on the next lap with Gary Estes moving into second but really on the move was Dayton 100 winner Tim Allensworth. Allensworth started eleventh and advanced to second where he put the pressure on Bobb for the lead. Allensworth tried an outside pass but each time Bobb pinched him off on the frontstretch but that did not disturb Allensworth as he still applied pressure on the leader. The hard charging Allensworth bumped Bobb on the backstretch which sent Bobb spinning and Allensworth to the tail. A lap twenty seven caution bunched up the field and seventh place starter Bill Burba entered the scene as he took second away from Gary Estes and then tried to pass Burba but the determined Bobb shook him off as the checker waved and Bobb recorded his second win of the season. With Burba second Estes, John Vallo, and Tony Brunke rounded out the top five. Estes and Bobb scored heat wins with fast time going to Allensworth at 13.947. For the first time in her rookie season Xenia's Jamie Brennemann started on the pole in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds and by coincidence her car just happens to be sponsored by Muffler Brothers of Xenia. Jamie did a good job as she led the first seven laps before the seasoned drivers caught up with her. For the first four laps it was Rob Garrett and the second lady driver, Kim Dill chasing the leader. On lap eight Urbana's Shawn Stroble had worked his way from seventh to steal the lead with Jason Mahaffey right behind him in second and fast timer Terry Humphrey who had started tenth was up to third. Stroble set the pace but there was two battles going on behind him. Mahaffey and Humphrey for second and Charlie Davis and five time winner Shawn Gray for third. Stroble pulled off the win for the fifth time in his Sutphen Towers machine with Mahaffey second in his Affordable Auto Parts machine and third was Humphrey in his Humphrey Engine Service machine. Charlie Davis ended up fourth and Shawn Gray fifth. Heat wins went to Charlie Davis and Rob Garrett with Humphrey fastest in time trials at 14.135. Xenia's Tom Williams wasn't too fast in time trials as he clocked in in ninth position but when it came feature time he proved to be the fastest in the Kil-Kare sport stocks. Williams in his Vogelsong Chiropractic sponsored car and Mike South Jr. led the field to the green flag and it was evident Williams was the fastest as he set sail to lead every lap for his sixth win of the season. South ran second all the way to the checker but there was a chain of cars fighting for positions behind him. Rusty Clark, Shawn Williams, Dave Lecocq, Jeff Marsh, and Mike South Sr. had quite a battle going on.At the finish it was Clark taking third followed by Shane Williams, and Lecocq. Jeff Marsh at 15.474 was fast timer. As it was Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night it seemed only appropriate that a DARF member should win an event and it was as Enon's Tim Haerr rewarded the DARF members with a win in the Oakley Blacktop compact feature. Chris Boggs led the first six laps but by lap eight Haerr had bolted from his tenth place starting slot to take the lead . Eleventh place starter Jerry Lachman shot up to second as the two crossed the finish line in that order. For Haerr it was his fourth win of the season in his Pizza & Co. sponsored machine. With Lachman second in his Complete Concrete machine, Matt Jackson, Randy Walton, and Boggs rounded out the top five. For the second week in a row fourteen year old Sloan Henderson of Franklin was the star of the show in the KOIL Bandolero's as she claimed the feature. Sloan took the lead on the first lap to lead all the way in the caution free event, out distancing Matt Kussmaul, Dustin Sword, Justin Campbell, and Tyler Poe who followed her across the finish line. Carlisle's Toby Alfrey shined in the KOIL legend feature as he put his #05 out front at the start and never fell back as he led all the way to claim the win. James Edsall had been running second but in the closing laps Byron Stowe claimed runner-up honors with Edsall, Jones, and Rob Jones finishing in that order in a bumper to bumper finish. Seven brave female drivers took part in the powder puff feature which ended in a shootout between Donna Haerr and Tonya Boggs. Haerr had led the first six laps and had built up quite a lead but Boggs came on strong to challenge Haerr. The two swapped paint a couple of times as Boggs stole the lead and win with Haerr second. Wendy Brunke, Angie Gilley, and Jamie McCoy rounded out the top five. Next Friday, August 26, will be the return of the big full size school bus figure-8 and demolition derby along with the late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
