Burba Claims First Of Season at Kil-Kare

By Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (8/11) - It was a full night of racing Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway with six different drivers visiting victory lane on EMT/Firefighters night.
Eaton's Bill Burba claimed his first NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Lang's Chevrolet/Mazda sponsored late models feature in an event that ran the entire thirty laps without a caution. John Vallo and Tony Brunke brought the field to the line for the start with Burba starting third. Vallo put his "Black Widow" out front the first four laps as Burba moved into second and passed Vallo for the lead. Vallo continued to hold on to second but third running Brunke was being challenged by fast timer Tim Allensworth who started seventh. Allensworth dropped Brunke to fourth on lap eight and then set his sights on Vallo, dropping him to third on lap ten. Burba had a decent lead but the rapid moving Allensworht was closing in on him when the checker. Allensworth, winner of the Dayton 100 the previous week claimed the runner up honors with third going to Vallo while Brunke was fourth and Dick Dunlevy fifth.
Allensworth had fast time of 13.951 with the heat wins going to Vallo and Russ Bobb.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored modifieds almost made it non stop. Shawn Stroble and Terry Humphrey took advantage of their front row starting slots with Stroble, of Urbana taking the lead in his Sutphen Towers sponsored machine. Humphrey dropped in right behind him in his Humphrey Engine Service machine with the duo running almost bumper to bumper all the way. Five time winner Shawn Gray advanced to claim third with previous weeks winner Jason Mahaffey fourth and the "Flying Fireman" Ralph Harrod fifth. Action was red flagged on lap twenty-eight when the cars of Charlie Davis, Derek Weatherhead, and Barret Tamasovich crashed hard on turn one which put all three cars out.
Rookie Derek Weatherhead had fast time of 14.132. Heat winners were Terry Humphrey and Neil McClelland.
Mike South Jr. might have had fast time in the Kil-Kare sport stocks but it was Xenia's Tom Williams in his Vogelsong Chiropractic sponsored machine visiting victory lane for the fifth time this year in the twenty lap feature. Jeff Marsh in his Superior Auto Sales Camaro chased Williams all the way to the checker to claim second with third going to Bret Clark. Previous weeks winner Shane Williams claimed fourth with Derek Louderbach fifth.
Mike South Jr. was fast timer at 15.347.
In the Oakley Blacktop sponsored compact class the Walton-Haerr show continued as the two claimed the first two spots. Haerr and his Mahaffey Auto Salvage sponsored car racked up feature win number three while Walton who claimed his fifth win the previous week was runner-up in his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored car. Early leader Matt Jackson was third with Bo Hoelscher fourth and Paul Holley fifth.
It was a good night for Franklin's Sloan Henderson as the fourteen year old claimed her KOIL Bandolero heat and then came back to win the fifteen lap feature. John Meyers, winner of the other heat led the first three laps of the feature but from then on it Sloan to the checker with Matt Kussmaul taking second with Meyers third. Ronnie Bassett and Justin Campbell rounded out the top five.

Twenty cars started the KOIL Legend Car feature with John Larkin taking the lead with Jason Dunn dropping into second.  Larkin continued to lead but Bryan Nuckles was on the move with a mad charge to the front. Nuckles took over second on lap eight and then put his Columbus Motor Speedway sponsored machine ahead of Larkin. Larkin didn't take getting passed lightly as he pressured Nuckles resulting with contact and Nuckles spinning. Both were sent to the tail end for the restart which put Jason Dunn in the lead. Dunn took the win, his first at Kil-Kare but it wasn't easy as Toby Alfrey was right on his bumper for second. Brandon Dunn was third followed by Rob Jones and Jeff Denney.
Heat winners were Larkin and Nuckles.
The EMT/Firefighters race was full of action with the winning team being the Spring Valley Township team who donated the $500 prize money to Miami Valley Hospitals Careflight in appreciation of the service they provide.
Coming up Friday, August 18 will be 3M/Pepsi night as well as Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night with all DARF members admitted free of charge to witness the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, compacts, KOIL Legend and Bandolero events. Spectator gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
