Estes Blisters Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (5/25) - Gary "The Rocket" Estes of
Miamisburg is definitely a driver on a mission in the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series late models at Kil-Kare Speedway. Friday night
the seasoned driver recorded his third feature win of the year
giving him a three out of five score.
Rickey Bates and two time winner Tim
Allensworth started in the front row of the eighteen car field and
it quickly developed into a side by side duel for the lead. Bates
showed as the leader of the first three laps with fast timer Donnie
Renner riding third but Gary Estes soon moved into the second spot
and then passed Bates for the lead.
Renner and Allensworth jockeyed for position
with Allensworth pulling away to pass Bates for second position as
Renner dropped Bates to fourth.
Once Estes took command in his Weiler Welding
sponsored machine he rapidly pulled away from the field to finish
three-quarter of a lap ahead of Allensworth at the checker. Renner
made Allensworth work to hold onto second but when the checker waved
it was Renner collecting third place money with fourth going to
Bates and fifth was many time track champ Dick Dunlevy Jr. who was
making his debut of the year.
Renner posted fast time for the first time this
year in his Zodiac Bookstores sponsored machine while heat wins went
to Virgil Powell in The Smoke Shop car and Sam Heckman captured the
other heat.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds feature
produced the third different driver to score a win this season. One
time winner Shawn Stroble and Steve Foster started in the front row
with Stroble in his Sutphen Towers sponsored car taking the lead
while Foster, in only his second start of the season was right on
his rear bumper holding down second. Fast timer Jerry Stapleton, a
former track champ made his presence known as he passed Foster for
second and then chased leader Stroble for fifteen laps before he
made his pass good to take the lead.
For Stapleton it was his first win of the
season in his A To Z sponsored car. Foster crossed the line in
second while Stroble claimed third. Derek Weatherhead and double
duty driver Gary Estes was home fifth.
Stapleton led the qualifiers with a time of
14.103 while heat wins were earned by Stroble and Terry Humphrey in
the Humphrey Engine Service machine.
Xenia resident Derek Harlow had a great night
in the school bus figure-8 and demolition derby. First Harlow in the
JCL Equipment/Acapulco Xenia sponsored bus was tops in the thirteen
bus figure-8 feature. He then came back to compete in the demolition
derby and ended up in a tie for the win as he and fellow competitor
Matt McCarty in the Mac Depot/LMA Landscaping bus locked together
and were declared co-winners.
The next event at Kil-Kare will feature the
powerful super late models of the Main Event Series plus the
modifeds, sport stocks, and compacts will be back in action with the
gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m..
