Xenia, OH. (5/11) - Gary
Estes seems to be the dominant driver in the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Late Models at Kil-Kare Speedway. Just like
the first night of the season, the Miamisburg resident set fast
time and then came back to capture the feature.
Friday nights win was not
an easy one by any means as it seemed like a battle for survival
in the thirty lap event that was halted no less than six times
due to on track incidents.
Two masters of outside
passing Tony Brunke and John Vallo brought the nineteen car
field to the starting line and at the drop of Mike Stapleton's
green flag it was a side by side duel between the two until the
first caution on lap four when Cal Busch was sidelined after
contact with the turn four wall. Vallo assumed the front spot on
the restart but again Brunke was right there along side of him
but that only lasted two laps when a six car pile-up occurred on
turn three. Jamie Sites and Darrell Norman were eliminated in
that fracas.
Two laps later the
caution appeared again when Jamie Hunt and Shawn Stansell
tangled collection Eddie Simpson with Stansell hitting the turn
one wall hard
resulting in heavy damage to his car and also Hunt and Simpson
were sidelined.
One lap after the restart
Russ Bobb spun and then on lap nineteen fourth place running Tim
Rausch blew an engine to bring out the final caution flag.
Meanwhile through all the
delays fast timer and ninth place starter Estes had been picking
off his opponents one at time to move up to challenge leader
Vallo after getting around second place running Brunke. Estes
put some distance between he and Vallo by the time the checker
waved on the Estes Bond Machine sponsored car with Vallo second
and Brunke third. Donnie Renner was holding down fourth position
but here came previous weeks winner Tim Allensworth to claim
fourth with Renner fifth.
Heat wins went to Darrell
Norman and Sam Heckman.
The Muffler Brothers of
Xenia modifeds produced the third different feature winner as
Troy's Greg Stapleton returned to Kil-Kare after a several years
absence. The Underwood Floor and Tile sponsored driver started
his night by posting fast time of 14.023 and then night capped
it with the feature win.
Newcomer Tom Skaggs and
Shawn Stansell led the field for the start with Kettering's
Stansell taking the lead with Rodney Kreusch and Derek
Weatherhead in hot pursuit. The caution appeared on lap five
when Dewayne Snyder Jr., Kim Dill, and Jack Black III tangled on
turn four. That did not deter Stansell but eighth place starter
and defending track champ Shawn Gray had moved up to challenge
Stansell but all of a sudden on about lap eleven Gray dropped
out.
Here came Stapleton from
ninth place to put the pressure on Stansell followed by Terry
Humphrey but Humphrey apparently bumped Stansell causing
Stansell to spin and Humphrey delegated to the
tail-end. Stapleton easily won the 30 lapper but second place
was a guess who will it be as Derek Weatherhead tried to pass
Stansell as they approached the finish line with Weatherhead
just nipping Stansell for the runner-up slot and Stansell third
followed by Rodney Kreusch and Humphrey.
Heat winners were Shawn
Stroble and Kim Dill.
Like the modifeds, a new
face appeared in the winners circle in the sport stocks as Jason
"Jughead" Evans joined Dave Lecocq and Rusty Clark as feature
winners.
Jay Laykins Jr. and Evans
started in the front row. Evans shot into the lead followed by
teammate and previous weeks winner Rusty Clark with
Shane Williams passing
Laykins for third. Clark tried to catch Evans but his hopes were
dimmed as smoke started to appear from his car and the black
flag greeted him. Williams tried desperately to catch Evans but
laps ran out and it was the Harveysburg Towing Camaro of Evans
taking the win with Williams second followed by Laykins, Tom
Williams, and Dave Lecocq.
Evans also claimed the a
heat win as did Justin Miller. Billy Ritchie lowered his own
track record of 15.024 down to 14.996.
It was David Sagers and
Amber Sites leading the Oakley Blacktop compacts to the green
flag with Sagers showing as the leader of the first two laps but
a determined Sites had other thoughts for Sagers as she slipped
inside to make her pass good with sixth place starter Jerry
Lachman passing Paul Holley for second. Ninth place starter and
fast timer Tim Haerr moved up to challenge Lachman when Haerr
bumped Lachman resulting in Lachman spinning Haerr which sent
Lachman to the rear of the field.
Sites continued to lead
but Haerr, know as the pizza man changed things on lap nine when
he took the lead to claim his third win. Sites was a determined
young lady as she claimed second followed by Chris Boggs, Jess
Drook, and Holley.
