Allensworth Nips Estes For Kil-Kare Win

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, Oh. (6/29) - In a most daring move ever seen in recent years at Kil-Kare Speedway Tim Allensworth miraculously somehow found a hole in lapped traffic coming out of turn four to somehow slip by race leader Gary Estes to claim his fifth NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature.
Twenty-one fine late models clocked in with nineteen of them starting the forty lap feature for the running of the Dick Dunlevy Sr. Memorial, an event run in the memory of the legendary driver who passed away earlier this year.
Ricky Bates and Sam Heckman brought the field to the green flag with Bates in his D&M Welding sponsored machine jumped into the lead while six cars behind him ran side by side lap after lap. Bates lead was cut short when Jamie Sites brought out the first caution when he spun on turn one. The single file restart was a plus for seventh and eighth place starters and this year feature winners Tim Allensworth and Gary Estes.
Bates continued to lead but Justin Alsip and seasoned veterans Sam Heckman, John Vallo and Dick Dunlevy Jr. were vying for positions. Estes and Allensworth were hooked up as they started advancing toward the front. On lap seventeen Estes was in second and by lap nineteen Allensworth was in third.
Estes passed leader Bates to show as the leader on lap twenty with Allensworth right behind him to drop Bates to third. From then on it was a fight every lap to see who would show as the race leader on the scoreboard. The duo weeded their way lapping cars but a group of them exiting turn three played an important part on the outcome of the event. With Estes in the lead he was momentarily slowed by a slower car and Allensworth saw an opening just wide enough to squeeze his RaceOasis.com machine through to steal the lead and the win. Estes was second with Bates third, John Vallo fourth, and Dunlevy fifth.
Estes had fast time of 13.835 while the heat wins went to Jamie Hunt and Russ Bobb.
The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifeds drew a fine field of twenty-one cars and their feature was almost as exciting as the late models as it boiled down to two drivers crossing the finish line almost side by side.
Mike Miller and Charlie Davis started in the front row of the thirty lap feature with Miller jumping out front with one time feature winner Shawn Stansell jumping up to challenge Miller. Stansell made an inside pass coming out of turn three to take the lead as Gary Eston Jr. and Greg Stapleton diced for third. Former track champion and fifth place starter Mike Carroll in his first Kil-Kare start this year showed he had not lost his touch as soon he and his Mc Donald's #1L was number one but young Stansell was hanging right in second spot when the caution came out when Gary Estes hit the outside wall and Terry Humphrey spun.
On the restart third place starter Greg Stapleton stole second from Stansell only to see the caution fly two laps later when Jamie Brenneman spun and Kim Dill made contact with the outside wall. Once back under green Carroll remained out front but Stapleton, winner of a feature earlier this year challenged Carroll but had to settle for second. Behind them Stansell, Terry Humphrey and Bud Perry had their own little battle going on and crossed the line in that order.
Perry and Estes won the heats while Stapleton had fast time of 13.876.
Former sport stock feature winners Dave Lecocq and Derek Louderbach started on the front row of their feature and you could almost bet one of them was going to come home the winner and sure enough, Lecocq did. He stayed in front all the way with the ageless Mike South Sr. hanging on to second all the way. Behind them though, the traffic was heavy between Tom Williams, Louderbach, Shane Williams, and Justin Miller as they fought for position. For Lecocq it was his third feature win of the year. Placing behind runner-up South was Tom Williams, Louderbach, and Shane Williams.
Justin Miller had fast time of 15.141 while Rusty Clark and Jason Evans won the heats.
Eighteen compacts started the Oakley Blacktop sponsored division with Jerry Lachman and Darryl Young starting in the front row. Lachman led as he was looking for his second win but that was about not to happen. Bo Hoelscher moved into second while the cars behind him were running side by side which had five time winner Tim Haerr blocked in. Hoelscher finally slipped by Lachman to claim the front spot and also made it win number two with Lachman runner-up. Chris Boggs held off the challenges of Tim Haerr to place third with Haerr fourth and Darryl Young fifth. Haerr had fast time of 15.004.
Next Friday night will be the Figure-Eight Trailer Race of Mahem along with a regular program with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m..
