Allensworth Takes
Kil-Kare Win In Borrowed Car
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (7/6 - NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series late model driver Tim Allensworth
is definitely on a roll at Kil-Kare Speedway as he recorded
his fourth straight feature win Friday night which was his sixth
of the year. The amazing fact he did it in a borrowed car.
Earlier in the
evening his familiar #24 experienced engine problems in hot
laps so the #7 machine usually driven by Donnie Renner was
offered to him and his crew and the Renner crew hastily set
the car up to Allensworth's liking.
With not even a
practice lap under his belt and being the last car to
qualify he posted fast time of 13.981, just slightly short
of his own track record of 13.925 set in his own car.
With the
inversion being a seven, it put Allensworth in the starting
slot for the start of the thirty lap feature.
Tony Brunke and
Virgil Powell led the field to starter Mike Stapleton's
green flag and the two of them immediately diced back and
forth for the lead until the caution came out on lap three
when Eddie Simpson spun on turn two.
With the single
file restart this put Powell in command but Brunke wasn't
about to give up as he kept hounding Powell while back in
the field previous feature winners Gary Estes and
Allensworth were on the move toward the front. The field was
slowed again when Justin Alsip slipped the turn four wall
but was able to continue and again Powell stayed in front
while Ricky Bates and John Vallo were trying to hold off the
advancing Estes and Allenswoth.
By lap twelve
Allensworth was in second with Vallo displacing Brunke for
third. Allensworth pulled up alongside of Powell and lap
after lap they vied for the lead with Allensworth finally
making his well known outside pass count as he took over the
front spot which he held right down to the checker with
Powell having his best finish of the year with a runner-up
finish. Vallo was home third followed by Brunke and Bates.
Tony Brunke won
the first heat and Cal Busch picked up his first ever
checker flag at Kil-Kare when he won the second heat.
The ole veteran
of the speedway, Terry Humphrey added another modified
feature win to list making it three for the season as he
captured the Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored thirty lap
feature.
Newcomer Rob
Yelton and Humphrey started on the front row with the crafty
Humphrey jumping into the lead followed by Yelton and one
time winner Mark Timmerman and Gary Eaton. Fast timer Greg
Stapleton was on the move as he sized up the traffic in
front of him, looking for an opportunity to slip by his
competition. Meanwhile Shawn Stansell and Derek Weatherhead
were having quite a battle for fifth as Stapleton passed
them by. Stapleton had advanced to second but Humphrey had
quite a lead over the field but a caution flag gave
Stapleton a chance to knock on Humphrey's rear bumper. And
that he did as he desperately tried to pass Humphrey on the
outside but each time Humphrey would hold him off.
When the checker
waved first on Humphrey, Stapleton was a very close second
with Timmerman third followed by Yelton and Weatherhead.
Stapleton had
fast time of 13.890 with the heats going to Josh Smith, his
first at Kil-Kare and to Rodney Kreusch.
The sport stocks
had one very happy and excited driver when the checker fell
on their feature as one of the elder drivers in the division
captured his first feature win and displayed his happiness
by doing a series of donuts on the frontstretch. Mike South
Sr. was in his glory.
By being seventh
fast qualifier this put him on the pole along with two time
winner Derek Louderbach and it sure did not take South long
to show his determination on winning as put his mount out
front and never gave the spot up.
The event ran all
twenty laps under the green with Louderbach riding in second
all the way while Mike South Jr. was home third. Justin
Miller out-dueled Tom Williams to take fourth with Williams
fifth.
Fast time went to
Dave Lecocq at 15.113 while Louderbach and Rusty Clark
took the heat wins.
Gary Williams
make his first start of the season in the Oakley Blacktop
compacts a winning one as he started on the pole and held
everyone else off to take the feature win. Aaron Harshbarger
held down second place for a long time but sixth place
starter Tim Haerr passed him on lap seven to take the
runner-up honors.Fast timer Chris Boggs was third with
previous weeks winner Bo Hoelscher fourth and fifth was
Jerry Lachman.
Racing resumes
next Friday with all divisions in action with the gates
opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
