Dayton 100 Belongs to
Allensworth at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (8/3) - Tim
Allensworth continues to be the dominate factor in the
late models at Kil-Kare Speedway as he claimed his second
straight NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Dayton 100
Friday night before a nearly packed grandstand.
Despite occasional rain
drops and a record ten caution periods, the Coshocton
resident took the lead on lap thirty seven and held the
lead right down to starter Mike Stapleton's checker flag.
Ricky Bates and Dick
Dunlevy started on the front row with Dunlevy putting his
Turbo Blue sponsored car into the lead after a battle with
Bates to show as the leader for the first fourteen
laps.
Fast timer Gary Estes
started fourth and quickly moved up to challenge Bates for
second making his pass good on lap five with eighth place
starter John Vallo and third place starter Shawn Stroble
in pursuit of Bates.
Estes put his Weiler
Welding machine around Dunlevy to show as the leader on
lap fifteen. Meanwhile fifth place starter Allensworth had
sized up the field in front of him as he slipped on the
inside of Bates to claim third place and then set sail for
second place running Dunlevy.
Allensworth displaced
Dunlevy and then went after leader Estes. Lap thirty-seven
showed him as the leader but Estes kept up the challenge
of trying to get the lead back as the seasoned veteran
Dunlevy put the pressure on Estes and then al of a sudden
Estes spun on turn four with white smoke engulfing his
car. Unfortunately for Estes this ended the night for the
driver who had won the event in 2004.
Allensworth was able to
pull away from the field leaving the rest of the pack to
fend for themselves and that they did. Defending track
champ Vallo pulled up alongside of Dunlevy as they
wrestled for second spot only to see the yellow displayed
when Dunlevy spun on turn four with eleven laps to go. On
the restart Allensworth continued to stay in command as
Dunlevy and Vallo resumed their battle for second with
Dunlevy claiming the runner-up money and Vallo third.
Modified driver Shawn
Stroble drove the Dave Sceva owned car, coming home fourth
and with just a few laps to go Justin Alsip nosed out Chad
Pendleton out to take the sixth place money.
"I'll tell you
what, it pretty warm in there and I don't think I could
have gone another twenty laps" noted Allensworth in
victory lane and "I didn't think I had the car to win
tonight" but he sure proved otherwise.
Estes had fast time of
the twenty qualifiers with a time of 13.866 with the heats
going to Russ Bobb and Chad Pendleton.
Nineteen Muffler
Brothers of Xenia Modifieds took to the track for their
thirty lap feature with seasoned veteran Terry Humphrey on
the pole and relatively newcomer to the modifieds, young
Gary Eaton Jr. on the outside front row.
After two false restarts
the third time was the charm to get the event underway and
Humphrey put his Humphrey Engine Service open-wheeler in
the lead but holding the lead would not be easy. Lap after
lap Eaton aggravated Humphrey all the way around the track
trying to get around him. Eaton would pull up alongside of
Humphrey only to see the vet surge ahead. Eaton gave up
the challenge with three laps to go as he stated
after the event he heard a funny noise, "sounded like
a tire going down" as he settled for second place
money.
For Humphrey it was his
fourth win of the year. In reference to his battle with
Eaton, Humphrey stated "it was a pretty good race,
I've got to thank the good Lord, he takes pretty good care
of me. I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this
but it's fun".
Shawn Stroble came on
strong in the closing laps as he reeled in on Eaton but
had to settle for third. Mike Miller was home fourth and
Aaron Morey was fifth.
Stroble had fast time of
13.978 with Gary Estes winning the first heat and Ron
McBride claimed his first ever checker flag at Kil-Kare by
winning the second heat.
Defending Kil-Kare Sport
Stock champion driver Tom Williams finally found himself
in victory lane after nine top five feature finishes.
Williams and Heath White started on the front row and
right away the battle was on between the two for the front
spot. Williams showed as the leader every lap but White
was definitely a serious challenger as he settled for
second place when the checker waved. Justin Miller was
third with fast timer (15.173) Dave Lecocq fourth and
fifth was Derek Louderbach.
In his post race
interview Williams stated "we have been struggling
all year, people thought I had retired and I did
too".
Riverside's Gary
Williams was a man on a mission in the Oakley Blacktop
compacts as he put his Affordable Auto Parts front-wheel
drive #41 in the lead at the drop of the green to stay
there until the checker waved. For Williams it was his
second win out of three starts this year. "This is a
great place to race and I want to thank Affordabe Auto
Parts, they give me all the parts I need" stated
Williams.
Aaron Harshbarger had
his best finish with a runner-up finish followed by Chris
Boggs, Tim Haerr, and Darryl Young.
Coming up on Friday
night, August 10, will be the annual EMT/Firefighter night
with a $500 to win cot race for charity plus the late
models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts will be in
action with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8
p.m.
