Estes Back In Winning
Form at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (8/10) - Three time
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model driver Gary
Estes and his Weiler Welding/Moore Trucking sponsored
machine was back in winning form at Kil-Kare Speedway.
Estes, winner of three feature so far this season captured
his fourth one Friday night and guess who was second. None
other than points leader and eight time winner Tim
Allensworth.
Bill Burba and Estes
started on the front row and just as the green flag
appeared Burba slightly bobbled a little coming out of
turn four giving Estes a clear shot for the lead into turn
one. Estes continued to pull away from the field leaving a
trio of drivers vying for second place. Burba had fast
timer John Vallo and Allensworth hounding him with Vallo
making a pass followed by Allensworth as Burba dropped to
fourth.
By the half way mark
Estes had built up a half lap lead over Allensworth who
had passed Vallo and even though Estes was slowed a little
as he came upon slower cars, Allensworth could not close
the gap.
Allensworth needed a
caution to bunch up the field to see if he could pass
Estes but he never got that chance as the event ran thirty
green flag laps. As Estes crossed the line Allensworth
claimed the runner-up money with Vallo third and Burba
fourth. For the second week in a row Justin Alsip finished
fifth.
"Whew, I don't
know" said an elated Estes, "we worked on it all
week trying to get it sorted out and it sure feels good to
win".
Fast timer was Vallo
with a time of 13.968 with the heat winners being Tony
Brunke and Russ Bobb.
When you have Terry
Humphrey and Shawn Stroble starting on the front row of
the Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds you know it will
be a showdown right down to the checker and that was the
story Friday.
Four time winner
Humphrey put his Humphrey Engine Service open-wheeler out
front but it wasn't long until Stroble was putting
the pressure on Humphrey. Time after time Stroble pulled
alongside of Humphrey but each time the seasoned Humphrey
held him off.
When the checker waved
it was Humphrey claiming his fifth win of the year with
Stroble a very close second. Former late model driver Mike
Miller started third and was able to hold onto that
position all the way but Jason Mahaffey was knocking on
his door to claim fourth. Fifth was Jerry Stapleton.
Shawn Stansell and Caleb
Rescher claimed the heat wins.
Shane Williams has been
trying to win a sport stock feature all season and it
looked as if this would be his time to win but it wasn't
to be. He and Dave Lecocq started on the front row of the
twenty lap event with Williams taking the lead but Lecocq
was right there pulling up alongside of Williams as they
raced side by side until Lecocq was able to put his
Baker's Locksmith machine in the number one slot. It
wasn't long until Heath White took over second spot and
was closing in on Lecocq when the checker flew. Williams
collected third place money while previous weeks winner
Tom Williams was fourth and fifth was Ed Lorentes.
In reference to his
battle with Shane Williams Lecocq said "he's really a
great guy to race with and thanks to everybody for coming
out tonight".
Shane Williams was the
heat winner.
Defending Oakley
Blacktop compact champion Randy Walton after seven
attempts finally picked up his first feature win. "We
been working all year, changed a lot of things on the car
and it finally paid off, it was fun" stated Walton in
his post race interview. Chris Boggs seemed to have second
place sewed up but Tim Haerr got a run on Boggs on a
restart after a caution period with Boggs home third
followed by Aaron Harshbarger and previous weeks winner
Gary Williams.
The KOIL Legend cars
were on hand and it was a showdown between previous
winners Toby Alfrey and Bryan Nuckles in the feature. They
both started in the front row with Alfrey showing as the
leader the first four laps and then it was the Columbus
Motor Speedway special of Nuckles showing the rest of the
way. Alfrey was nipping at the rear bumper of Nuckles in
the closing laps as they crossed the line in that order.
However Nuckles car failed to pass post race inspection
and he was disqualified giving the win to Alfrey. Rob
Jones was next with Adam Roberts third,Jaames Edsall
fourth and Corey Smith fifth.
Heat winners
were Alfrey and Nuckles.
The KOIL Bandoleros
rounded out the six divisions of cars on hand with young
Dustin Sword being the kingpin of the group. Sword claimed
his third feature win at Kil-Kare but before that he
warmed up by claiming his heat win. The other heat winner,
Justin Campbell was second followed by Ethan Burgess,
Brandon Nelson, and Ty Rose.
Coming up this Friday
will be Compact Super Friday featuring the compacts in a
40 lap feature plus the return of the KOIL Legends and a
full program of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late
