Estes Snares Kil-Kare Opener

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (4/20) - Veteran Kil-Kare Speedway driver Gary Estes of Miamisburg captured the season opener NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature Friday night on a very chilly night. Estes started the evening off by setting a new track record of 13.663 in time trials and then came back to capture the 30 lap main event.
Rookie late model driver Shawn Stansell and former track record holder Tim Allensworth led the field to the green flag in the feature. Several caution periods interrupted the action but once the field really got rolling Estes who started tenth had his sights set on reeling in the front runners. One by one he and the Bond Machine #75 advanced toward the front as he caught up with leader Allensworth. Estes finally made his outside pass good to take the lead and the win.
Stansell had been running a strong and steady third until he made contact with the outside wall on turn one and was sidelined. Allensworth held on to claim second place while second year late model driver Jamie Sites ran right with the leader to finish a close third. Second generation driver Donnie Renner claimed fourth and Darrell Norman fifth.
Stansell and Tim Rauch each scored heat wins.

Urbana's Shawn Stroble was a man a mission in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia modified feature. Gary Estes had advanced from his fourth place starting slot to take the lead while seventh place starter Stroble in his Pro Power Engines powered #72 was weeding his way to the front. Stroble finally powered around Estes to claim the win with Estes second, Terry Humphrey third. Last years champ Shawn Gray was fourth and Shawn Stansell fifth.
Second year driver Derek Weatherhead posted fast time of 14.167 while the heat wins went to Stroble and Estes.

Teammates Jason Evans and Rusty Clark led the sport stock feature field but their night turned out to be one of disappointment as both were sidelined with mechanical problems. For Dave Lecocq it was his lucky night as he picked up the feature win with Shane Williams not far behind in second place and third was fast timer Billy Ritchie who started tenth and was coming on strong. Derek Louderbach and Tom Williams rounded out the top five.
Lecocq and Rusty Clark captured the heat wins.

Starting thirteenth seemed to be a lucky number for Tim Haerr in the compacts. Ivin Fugate and Troy Patterson started in the front row and they soon found out they had their hands full as Louis Ebright took the lead and then here came Haerr to challenge Ebright. Haerr put his Mahaffey Auto Parts #8 around Ebright to claim the win with Ebright second followed by Jerry Lachman, Bo Hoelscher, and Chris Boggs.
As it was Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night all feature winners were presented DARF shirts by DARF representative Vicki Black.

Action continues Friday night with Friday Night Thunder with double points offered in each division with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
