MAHAFFEY AND STONE TAKE STOCKTOBERFEST WINS

Xenia OH ( 10/7/12): KilKare Speedway closed out its 2012 season with a full program of racing with the running of the Stocktoberfest for the street stocks and compacts. A full field of cars showed up in both divisions on a cold blustry day.
Former NASCAR Whelen Racing Series Don Mahaffey paced the field during time trials in the street stocks as he set fast time and a new track record in his Young Racing Monte Carlo. When racing started it was clear this was to be no Sunday afternoon ride thru the park. Mahaffey soon surged out front in the 150 lapper as cars battled for position behind him. The battle soon turned to carnage as numerous crashes and blown engines slowed the pace. Mahaffey was leading at the halfway point as the cars took a competition break. When racing resumed Mahaffey again continued his way to the checker. Josh Cahill was able to keep Mahaffey in his sights but was unable to mount a challenge as Mahaffey drove his Hot Rodz Sales ride to the win. Indiana drivers James Kirby, Joshua Poore and Joshua Myers finished third thru fifth.
The Compact feature was a mirror image of the street stocks as a chain of spins, crashes and blown engines gave the track crew all the work they could handle. Bryan Lynch paced the field during time trials as he piloted his Honda to fast time. When the feature started it was an all out war as drivers battled all the way around the oval. The only serious crash involved Gary Williams as he took on the frontchute wall in his Honda. Williams was unhurt, but the Honda was a rolling pile of twisted metal. The race soon turned into a three car battle as Matt Stone, Buck Purtee and Kevin Flynn swapped paint and track position. Coming to the checker Stone was leading, contact with Purtee sent him sliding across the finish line. Stone's slide just beat Purtee to the checker. The win was the first of the season for the former track champion in his Glassman backed Honda. Purtee was second, with Flynn third, Lynch fourth and Michael Robinson fifth.
