Stansell and Hoelscher Tops at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - It was a special night for the sport stock and compact drivers at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday as they were featured with the ARCA Truck series and awarded with extra pay. And for their nights efforts Dayton's Shawn Stansell and Riverside's Bo Hoelscher were the top winners as Stansell claimed the $750 to win sport stock feature and Hoelscher claimed the $500 compact feature.

It was fifty laps to go in the sport stock feature which had polesetter Rodney Roush taking the front spot only to have the caution light flip on as fast timer Phil Gussler Jr. spun on the backstretch. After two more cautions action finally got underway and underway was a battle between Dave Barnhart and Shawn Stansell right behind leader Roush.

Barnhart, driving the car normally driven by Tyler Mahaffey edged ahead of Roush for the lead and Stansell then secured second as he started to hound Barnhart. On lap eight Barnhart made a quick trip to the pits for an adjustment leaving Stansell the new leader. With Stansell in the lead Gussler was advancing, taking second spot from Roush on lap eight and dash winner Josh Longstreth was giving Roush a battle for third.

At the halfway signal it was Stansell, Gussler, Ed Lorents was up to third, Roush fourth and Longstreth fifth. The final caution flag flew on lap thirty one when Duane Bohrer spun on the frontstretch. Gussler was inching closer as the laps wound down and when the checker waved it was Stansell taking the top spot and $750 in his Affordable Auto Parts/Replacement Auto Parts/Muffler Brothers/Dad's Auto Body sponsored machine. Phil Gussler Jr. claimed $500 for second while Ed Lorents earned $400 for third. $300 went to fourth place finisher Rodney Roush and $250 to Josh Longstreth.

Josh Longstreth jumped out in front in the sport stock dash only to see the caution fly when John Haney smacked the turn one wall. On the restart Longstreth stayed in fron all the way to claim his first dash win his first dash of the season as he led Shawn Stansell, fast timer Phil Gussler Jr., and John Haney.

The heat of the sport stocks had Ed Lorents and David Boyle in the front row with Lorents taking the lead  but unfortunately Lorents broke out on his time and had to surrender the lead to Boyle's. On the restart Brian Cottril shot inti the lead and when the checker waved it was Brian Cottril taking the win over a rapidly closing in Courtney Hannah in her first start in a sport stock a close second with Dave Barnhart third and David Boyle fourth.

Seventeen compacts started their thirty five lap feature with Gary Williams sitting on the pole with Williams jumping out front with David Lucas second and Bo Hoelscher third. On the second lap Hoelscher pass Lucas for second and the four time feature winner was after Williams as the two ran side by side with Hoelscher taking the high side to pass Williams for the lead. Williams was then being challenged by Chris Boggs and fast timer Matt Stone with both getting around him by lap fourteen.

Action was slowed on lap fifteen when Larry Roark stopped between turn three and four which put Stone on Hoelschers rear bumper for the restart. Stone tried to get around Hoelscher but Hoelscher was not about to reinquish the front spot  but after several more laps Stone started to fall back from Hoelscher. In the meantime as the event ran under the green to the checker Hoelscher was really flying around the track lapping cars. When the checker waved it was the $500 first place money going to the Riverside resident. Stone, a three time winner claimed the $350 for runner-up with third and $275 going to one time winner James McElfresh. Fourth and $225 richer was Bryan Lynch with $150 going to Ron Sagers.

Bryan Lynch claimed the four lap fast car dash over Matt Stone, Chris Boggs, and Bo Hoelscher. Taking home the heat win was Ron Sagers followed by Gary Williams, James McElfresh, and Nick Barnett.

Paul Hahn claimed the ARCA Truck Series 100 lap event.

The IKO Minicups join the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts Friday, July 8 with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
