Mahaffey,Stapleton, Stansell, Lynch Visit Victory Lane at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - It was definitely a hot night at Kil-Kare Speedway but the fans showed up for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events and the crazy trailer race of destruction.
Claiming feature wins were Don Mahaffey in the Sonic Drive-In late models, Greg Stapleton in the modifieds, Shawn Stansell in the sport stocks, Bryan Lynch  in the compacts.
Fifth fast qualifier Tony Brunke and fourth fast timer Ray Muncy led the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late modells to the green with Brunke nosing ahead of a pack of five close running cars. Muncy then surged ahead with Mike Stacy challenging Brunke as he took second with Sam heckman dropping Brunke back to fourth. Fast timer Don Mahaffey then went to work on the field taking fourth and then worked on heckman for third. Next would be his teammate Stacy who was right on Muncy's bumper.
Mahaffey put his hose on the inside of Stacy as they ran door to door chasing leader Muncy. Muncy had his hands full holding off Mahaffey and Stacy  as they both tried to go around Muncy at the same time but it didn't work as Muncy shook them off. Then the caution flew on lap sixteen when Russ Bobb spun into the infied and Muncy and Heckman spun on turn four. Muncy was determined the cause of the caution and wea sent to the tail. This set the stage for a showdown between Stacy and Mahaffey with Mahaffey taking the lead on lap nineteen.
Mahaffey did his usual, pulled away from the field leaving Stacy riding second , Heckman third with Brunke fourth and Terry Sscherz fifth.
Mahaffey's Oakley Blacktop  special took the checker for his sixth win of the year. Stacy was home second followed by Heckman, Brunke, and Scherz.
It was the younger against the older in the modified feature as seasoned Jerry Stapleton and fifteen year old Flyin' Ryan Fleming started on the front row with Stapleton taking the lead with Fleming second and another rookie, Brandon Oakley riding third. Right behind them fast timer Greg Stapleton was on the move on the outside passing car after car and then passed his uncle Jerry on lap eight for the lead. Jerry did not give up easy but once Greg had a clear shot in the lead he pulled away from Jery only to have the caution appear on lap ten when Caleb Reschar spun.
Greg again started to put some distance over the field after the restart and at the halfway point it was Greg, Jerry, Oakley, Ray Muncy, and Derek Barnette the top five. The second caution flew on lap eighteen when Derek Barnette and Shawn Stansell bumped on the backstretch with Barnette spinning.
Away went Greg Stapleton on the restart and back in the field Caleb Reschar was a driver on a mission as he worked his way around cars trying to make up spots from his earlier spin.  With seven laps to go the caution flew when Oakley tried to slip under Jerry Stapleton going into turn one and it didn't work as he bumped Jerry and they spun to a stop going out of turn two which sent Oakley to the tail.
The full moon kicked in when caution again flew on lap twenty six when Ray Muncy spun coming out of turn four and Shawn Stansell and Jason Mahaffey were involved which took Stansell and Mahaffey out however Stansell was able to return after quick repairs. At the same time Derek Barnette blew a tire and hit the turn one wall hard resulting with heavy front end damage which put him on the sidelines. Muncy also dropped out of competition.
Reschar was up to third as he set sail for Jerry Stapleton as the white flag flew with Greg Stapeton claiming his fifth feature of the year. Jerry Was second with Reschar third and it was a thriller for fourth as Brandon Oakley barely nipped Grant Gamble for fifth at the line.
First heat of modifieds has Shawn Stansell and Jerry Stapleton in the front row Stapleton got the jump over Stansell to take the lead with Stansell second and Ryan Fleming. Doing triple duty driving in three classes tonight was Ray Muncy who tried to catch Fleming as Stapleton held the lead and the top four ran bumper to bumper. As the checker waved it was Stapleton taking the win followed by Shawn stansell and Ryan Fleming.
Veteran Indiana driver Darrel Skaggs sat on the pole of the first heat with second year driver Grant Gamble on the outside. Skaggs took the lead but it was his teammate Joe Jennings taking over the front spot as Skaggs dropped back. Derek Barnette and Caleb Reschar put the pressure on Jenings as they ran side by side and wow, here came Reschar to steal the lead out of turn four for the win with Jennings second and Barnette third.
When the sport stocks hit the track for their 25 lap feature it was John Haney and Ray Muncy on the front row to face the green flag. Muncy took the lead with Ron Lewis moving up on the outside of Haney but it was fast timer Shawn Stansell taking the second spot as Lewis faded. Points leader James harding was running fourth behid Haney and here came Jamie Sites to take third as Stansell stole the lead. Muncy held second with Sites third with Harding trying to figure a way to catch Haney when the pace was slowed when Chris boggs spun on turn four.
Stansell continued to set the pace after the resstart while a battle developed for fourth between Haney, Harding and Lewis with five laps to go. Stansell and his Affordable Auto Parts special claimed their third feature of the year as Ray Muncy, Jamie Sites, John Haney and James harding in that order.
Rodney Terry and Paul Holley started on the front row of the compact feature as they diced side by side for the lead with Bo Hoelscher, Joe Hoelscher and fast timer Bryan Lynch all dogging for positions. Slowing the pace was a caution on lap five when two cars tangled.
Paul Holley had the lead on the restart as Rodney Terry had his hands full holding off the challenges of the Hoelscher's. Joe slipped on the inside of Holley on lap ten to take the lead as he pulled away from the field. Bo held second with Bryan Lynch right behind him when Joe tangled momentarily with a slow car giving the lead to Lynch with but Joe Hoelscher ended up second and Bo Hoelscher third. Pau Holley was fourth with Rodney Terry fifth for a wild finish.
Tyer Mahaffey sat on the pole of the compact first heat with Rodney Terry alonside with rookie Mahaffey setting sail into the lead. Paul Holley inherrited second when Terry departed with mechanical woes with fast timer Bryan Lynch trying for second but it was Holley hanging on to second sport as Mahaffey scored the heat win.
The second heat had Steve Barnhart and Davey Shaw in the front row as they went three wide into turn one with Shaw hoding the lead on the first lap. Bradleu Adkins tried to move up on the front runners but went wide on turn four dropping back to the tail. rookie Michael brewer had passed Shaw for the lead as he wite flag came out and claimed the win with Shaw second and Dewayne Snyder Jr. third.
The trailer race of destruction rounded out the nights activity with ten crazy vehicles running on the figure-8 track towing trailers with a variety of items with debris flying everywhere. When it was finally over it was a tie between Trey Edwards and Nicholas Meade.
Next Friday night, July 30, the FAST Legend Cars will join th NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
