Kil-Kare Wins Go To Mahaffey, Oakley, Lewis,
Hoelscher, Stiffler
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. - It was more like football weather
Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway for the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Racing Series events with cool
temperatures for the fans but they were treated to
another fine racing program as the season is rapidly
drawing down. When the final feature checkers waved
it was Don Mahaffey, Brandon Oakley, Ron Lewis, Joe
Hoelscher, and Brad Stiffler claiming wins.
Bob Sibila and Sloan Henderson were the front row
starters in the thirty-five lap NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late model
feature with sixteen starters. Side by side they ran
with Sibila taking charge with Henderson right
behind him only to see the caution come out when
Sibila spun on the frontstretch on lap three with
both Sibila and Henderson sent to the tail. Mike
Stacy who was running third found himself the leader
on the restart with David Carter and fast timer Don
Mahaffey fight behind. Stacy pulled away with Carter
second and a smoking Mahaffey third. Another caution
appeared on lap ten when Henderson and Jeff Marsh
tangled on turn two with Henderson heading to the
pits for a quick repair and returned.
Unfortunate for Stacy he was sent to the pits for
a supposed fluid leak but none was found and was
given the front spot back. Mahaffey slid under
Carter for second and then wenrt after teammate
Stacy. Stacy worked his way around slower traffic
and back in the pack Sloan Henderson was working her
way up as she was sixth by lap twenty three.
Stacy continued to lead in quest of his fourth
feature win when the caution came out when several
cars tangled on turn four. Mahaffey stole the lead
on lap twenty eight to claim his tenth win of the
year in his Oakley Blacktop special with Stacy
second followed by David Carter, Sam Heckman, and
Terry Scherz.
Thirteen modifieds took to the track for their
thirty five lap feature with fifth fast qualifier
Brian Reeser on the pole with fourth fast timer
Brandon Oakley alongside. Reeser got the jump on
Oakley to lead with Oakley giving him a good run for
the front spot. Brad Williams was riding third as
Oakley nosed just ahead of Reeser to take the lead
on lap six. Williams just took second as the caution
came out due to debris on the track dropping him
back to third.
On the restart Oakley pulled away as Williams again
went after Reeser for second with fast timer Greg
Stapleton on the move, moving on the inside of
Williams as the second caution came out with Derek
Barnette departing to the pits. Again Oakley charged
ahead and here came Williams on the inside to take
second with Stapleton right on his rear bumper.
Oakley still enjoyed a good lead but Williams and
Stapleton were creeping up slowly.
With five laps to go Williams and Stapleton were
still trying to catch leader Oakley who was looking
for his first feature win and again the pace was
slowed with three laps to go when Ray Muncy spun on
turn four. The pressure was on Oakley on the restart
with Williams, Stapleton, Reeser and Derek
Weatherhead right behind and again the yellow flew
with two laps to go.
A proud sixteen year old Brandon Oakley finally
snatched the win in his Oakley Blacktop machine as
Williams and Stapleton came across the line amost
side by side with Williams second and Stapleton
third. Fourth went to Brian Reeser and fifth was
Derek Weatherhead.
Sixteen compacts faced starter Mike Stapleton's
green flag for their twenty lap feature with Shane
Sparkman and Joe Hoelscher the pacesetters and
Hoelscher wasted little time in taking the lead but
the red flag came out right away when Bradley Adkins
hit the frontstretch wall real hard. Withthe green
flag back out Hoelscher did take the lead with son
Bo, previous weeks winner right behind in second as
fast timer Brian Lynch moved into third with Paul
Holley running fourth. Lynch edged on the inside of
Bo as the yellow came out putting him back in third.
The Hoelscher's surely had the pressure on them from
an eager Lynch as he tried to figure a way around Bo
as Joe had a good lead. Lynch made his challenge
good at the halfway to take second then was on Joe's
rear bumper, Lynch tried the inside of Joe but Joe
shook him off. Slow traffic didn't deter the leaders
as they weeded through them as the white flag waved
and then it was fireworks as Lynch and Joe rubbed
real hard on the last lap with Lynch sliding off the
the track and onto the big track dropping him back
to fourth. For Joe Hoelscher it was his fourth
feature win of the year as Bo Hoelscher, Paul
Holley, Bryan Lynch, and Tyler Mahaffey rounding out
the top five.
Ron Lewis and points leader James Harding led the
field in the sport stock feature with Lewis out
front while Travis Digges, Harding, and fast timer
Shawn Stansell were in a tight battle for second as
the caution came out for a fuel leak on Donnie
Gregory's car. Harding went to work on leader Lewis
on the restart as Stansell moved into third and then
started to close the gap on the leaders. The caution
appeared again on lap four for fuel again leaking on
Gregory's car as Jay Lakins Jr. departed the track.
Lewis had his hands full on the restart as he
managed to lead but here came Stansell trying the
outside groove on Harding but Harding held on but
again Stansell tried but failed.
Fourth place riding Travis Digges brought the
caution out on lap ten when he spun on turn four and
again Lewis held the front slot on the restart.
Previous weeks fast timer Rodney Kreusch was now
fourth and again up front Stansell was trying the
outside of Harding as the laps were winding down. It
was bumper to bumper with the top three. At the five
lap signal Harding tried the iside of Lewis but
Lewis fought back to hang on to the lead. A great
finish it was as Lewis and his Affordable Auto Parts
special claimed his third win of the year as Harding
and Stansell were side by side at the finish with
Harding second and Stansell third. Fourth was
Rodney Kreusch and fifth John Haney.
Trey Craig and Brad Stiffler led the IKO mini
cups to the green in the first feature with Craig
and Stiffler running bumper to bumper with Stiffler
taking the lead on lap six. Amanda Harrison and
Jacob Bartellis and brought the caution out on lap
seven when they spun on turn seven. Stiffler held
the lead but Craig was within striking distance and
did strike on lap eleven as he took the lead with
Stiffler second and not far behind was Cory Deuser
who then spun on turn four. Stiffler went to work
on Craig and did take the lead with four laps to go
as he sought his third Kil-Kare win and win he did.
Trey Craig, Cory Deuser, Lorance Matthew, and Jacob
McClay rounded out the top five.
Cory Deuser and Trey Craig started on the front
row of the second IKO mini cup feature with Deuser
taking the lead with Trey Craig and first feature
winner Brad Stiffler in third. Stiffler wasted
little time in taking the lead as he did so on lap
four and started to pull away from the field. At the
halfway it was Stiffler, Deuser, Craig, Lorance
Matthew, and Jacob McClay the top five and that is
just the way they finished.
Kil-Kare will be back in action next Friday with a
